July 13, 200718 yr Got a set of front CV axles from a local wrecking yard. Suppose to fit all Legacys from 95 to 99. Both need new boots so I got some and it's a no-go. New boots are just too small. I know these boots I tried will fit my 95 LS wagon because I have used them. Noticed some differences in shaft size. The "new" axles have a one inch diameter shaft and the shaft has 3 identifying rings. All other Legacy axles I have seen have a smaller shaft size and only two identiftying rings. My question is what model used these HD axles and where can I get new boots that fit? Wasted an hour at the local parts store. Counter person crosschecked just about everything and could not come up with a match.
July 13, 200718 yr A FSM for 1995 Impreza does show an axle with three bands, identifying it as 87AC-25. I believe it's a FWD axle and would be the same as one for FWD Legacy. If so, you need FWD boots. Between the two kinds of axles, the splined ends are the same on both sides but apparently the thick axle comes with bigger CV joints. Maybe it was later used on some 2.5 models? Just speculating. The axle with two bands is called 82AC-25.
July 13, 200718 yr Author Thank you and I think you are on to it. All my research was for AWD vehicles. I researched every model from 1990 up to 1999 and nothing. Never thought about the FWD models. But it may all now be a moot point. Found some XT6 CV boots on the shelf I bought years ago and the darn things worked. Whatever model these axles came from they are definitely HD being the same size as an XT6 axle. john
July 13, 200718 yr 2wd impreza axles are 23 spline. 2wd legacy are 25 spline just like the awd models. Those axles aren't the same.
July 14, 200718 yr Author What was the last year for the FWD Legacy anyways? Since both of these axles came from out under Legacys, both were AWD, they both must be FWD Legacy axles someone previously installed.

July 14, 200718 yr 2wd impreza axles are 23 spline. 2wd legacy are 25 spline just like the awd models. Those axles aren't the same. For Impreza, this probably holds true for earlier 1.8l models. The '95 FSM says both axles have 25 splines.

July 14, 200718 yr It holds true for ALL 2wd Impreza's. I'm not positive if an Impreza ever saw an ej22 2wd or not, so you may very well be correct... All 2.2 Imprezas were AWD but maybe they standardized the hubs by the time the 2.2l engine was introduced? If memory serves, 13" wheels on the base FWD model came with a hub that had 4 studs. By 1995, they did away with it. In any case, I just hope what I saw in the manual will apply to the Legacy.
July 14, 200718 yr I've never seen any impreza with a 4 bolt. I've been around a few 2wd 93's and the were 5 lug. I don't remember if they were 13" wheels or not though.
July 14, 200718 yr There is a mint 93 Impreza FWD running around here. It's red with gray bumpers, 13" steel wheels (5 lug BTW) with center caps, and no radio. It was the base of the base
July 15, 200718 yr I may be wrong about the hub with four studs, but loooking at front axles in the catalog of remanufactured parts at http://endwrench.com/oepropdf/remanufactured.pdf, one finds that all 1990-99 Legacy and 1993-99 Impreza models are covered with just two numbers, with one number for 1990-94 FWD Legacy and the other for the rest, including all Imprezas. Granted, they must have consolidated several OE numbers into one like in the aftermarket, but it does say something about the spline count.
July 17, 200718 yr Why not replace the whole axles? If you know anyone that has a commercial account with somewhere like Advance Auto you can get them for $40ea with a lifetime warranty. Or try to find the newer style (00 and up) and just knock off the tone ring on the outboard joint. The newer boots have more convolutions and they don't tear all of the time like the older ones. Just my 2 cents.
