You can swap a 5spd d/r tranny in there. All the info you need for that swap is here in the forums. Try posting in the wanted section of the classifieds for either option.

Check craigslist. There is a guy who is selling brand new trannies. I think cyberbackpacker posted about this.

There were a couple auto 4x4 ea82's over at the pick-your-part in wilmington, if you're willing to drive and pull it... another option

Might want to check the vacuum modulator before replacing the transmission. If it stops working you end up with no up shifts.

i replaced the transmission module cuz it was smoking white smoke ordered 1 and it did'nt work or i mean shift so i got enother one same thing

older transmissions operate like an hydraulic computer. They are constantly balancing out throttle pressure (modulator) vs govenor pressure. Without either one of these the car wont shift properly.

Check your govenor, it may be bad or stuck.

if you find the governor is bad you can swap in anotherone from any 3spd auto trans wether it be 2wd or 4wd

And its something thats not uncommon to go bad on a auto tranny.

I am rather astute at both, if I do say so myself.. (that is why so many of my posts extend so long.. I suspect that just about any of us who type the "books" here all the time can probably type at least 50-60 WPM) but I have always mostly ignored automatic transmissions and it is a sheer accident of fate that I own one now.

 

What I am saying is, I have been far from motivated to learn about something I never wanted to use, much less have to diagnose or repair. Thanks again for showing me the light anyhow, since I (regretfully) need to know these things.

The new computer controlled trannies do away with a lot of the parts that would cause a tranny to fail. The govenor (replaced with the VSS), modulator (ECU input) and most the valve body (solenoids) are gone. Clutch bands are disapearing (replaced with clutch packs).

 

The basics of automatic trannies have been around since the begining. The model A ford had a planetary gear set. Those three pedals on the floor were for the brakes, low and high gear (press it in you were in low), and reverse. Throttle and ignition advance were on the steering wheel hub.
