4EAT slow to engage

Featured Replies

Get a transmission tune-up kit from Justice Brothers, it'll be two bottles of stuff, one bottle you pour in and let the car idle for 5 minutes, and run it through the gears a couple of times to clear any gunk out of the valve body, then you drain and install a new tranny filter, and add the other bottle of stuff with the new fluid. It works really well...

Go here http://www.justicebrothers.com/pages/products/products_pas.htm and scroll down to the one that says "Automatic Transmission Service" that's what you need...

There's an anti-drain back valve in the line that supplies ATF to the torque converter. Over time this valve fails, so it takes a little bit to fill the torque converter back up.

I do not know if this valve/line is internal or external, but I experienced this with my 90 legacy when it was AT, and had an trans tech mention the valve.

its internal, and i think in the valve body.

Sorry if this is too basic but have you checked the trans fluid level?

My old Chevy used to do that whenever it was low (common on that old car).

check level, fluid flush, get the easy stuff out of the way.

i've seen them go for a long, long time like this. annoying, but i wouldn't consider it trashed just yet, keep an eye on if it's getting worse or not.

Most of the time it is an internal seal issue on the forward or reverse drum
