Running DOnut Spare with older tires? Blow Xfer case?

Featured Replies

Hi all!

We all know that we are supposed to buy 4 NEW tires for our AWD Subee's because of the Xfer Case blow up problem.

My questions IS this! When you have 4 tires that are older...one blows. When you put on that shiney never used Donut Spare, will it fry up that Xfer Case because it's new and it's circumference is bigger, therefore not making Xfer Case Happy!!

Do you have to pull out that mystery fuse that enables the AWD system?

Ok...where to start. The fuse is the FWD fuse for the automatic transmissions. Installing the fuse puts it in FWD mode. Normally the FWD fuse is not installed. MT's may have an FWD fuse position but it doesn't do anything.

The main point is that all tires must match within 1/4" circumference, as measured with a narrow tape measure.

The blowing of the transfer case is actually the development of torque bind.

When running the donut spare, for AT's the FWD fuse should be installed.

Also the donut is an emergncy tire only. Its not meant for over 60-65 mph for a couple of reasons, one is the tire, the other is to protect the drivetrain. You are supposed to get your tire fixed at the soonest possible moment, not 300 miles later :)

Also the donut spare goes on the back axle and not the frount. If you have a flat on the frount you are suppose to remove one of the rears place it on the frount and then the spare on the rear. Then place the fuse.

Or do as my better half does and carry a couple of cans of "fix a flat" to get home on. It doesn't work on a blowout but a nail or screw it is just the ticket for her. But then you get to explane to the tire dealer why you have all this gunk inside the tire that they need to clean out to fix the tire tire the right way.

Don't us fix-a-flat if you have the tire pressure monitoring system. It will destroy the sensor, and you'll pay $$$ for a new one plus a trip to the dealer to get it programmed.
