2.5 ticking on startup

Featured Replies

I have a 99 outback with the 2.5 DOHC engine and 193k miles on it. Normally the engine runs quietly and smoothly. However, after taking a long trip, as I did yesterday (600 miles) the engine had a tick this morning on startup. It only lasted for a few seconds, but I'm curious as to what the cause could be? Do I need to reseal the oil pump, or is ther another issue I need to look at?

Thanks

This is an EJ25 and it on a fresh oil change

I believe that has solid lifters (rather than hydraulic?) Those can tick a little bit until the oil starts to flow into the valve covers.

Maybe its because the car has 193,000 miles on it.

I wouldnt worry about it, aside from checking the oil level. As long as it goes away your fine.

A lot of 2.5s, maybe the majority, have piston slap until they warm up. The more wear you get the more slap you get. As long as it goes away when warm Subaru says no problem.

Same brand of oil and filter as before? Same weight of oil?
