September 11, 200718 yr So I found a high topper for my Brat, should be going to pick it up on Friday. My question is, how do I attach this thing to my Brat? I dont want this thing go shooting off onto some guy in a miata behind me.

Mine has some stainless steel 'hook bolts' that hook into the load tie in points on the wall of the bed and then slip through a small piece of tubing welded to the frame of the topper, I'll snap some pics and upload them first thing tomorrow if you'd like... a picture's a lot better than my hacked up words:headbang:

September 11, 200718 yr they make what are essentially C-clamps designed for this purpose. A few small bolts as "studs" to hold it in place laterally, and say three c clamps on either side should hold it perfectly fine.
September 11, 200718 yr Author How much does this thing weight? The sube dealership that I go to religiously is close to where I am picking it up at. Do you think they would carry them in a reasonable price range?
September 11, 200718 yr Here's a snap of the bolt that I have holding my top down... there are 2 on each side of the bed, they hook into the load tie in points on the wall of the bed. My topper can't weigh more than 30-40 lbs... If it didn't flop around so much I'm sure I'd be able to lift it myself, it's just so dang awkward to try and carry alone...
September 11, 200718 yr Author Thanks for the pics. I called down to the parts guy at the subaru place and they dont carry those hooks anymore. Do you think I would have some luck finding these kind of things at a Lowes or something?

Do you think I would have some luck finding these kind of things at a Lowes or something? Measure the distance from the tie down in your bed to the top of the trim and then add about 2 inches. Go to the Hardware store and look for a hook that is that long. Make sure that the threads are a bit longer than the distance between the hook and the chrome. This is a pretty common hardware item. Just make sure you get two nuts so you can lock it together.

Do you think I would have some luck finding these kind of things at a Lowes or something? Fastenal 372 Woodlawn Rd Crossville, TN 38555 P: (931)456-6099 These guys will have it. It looks like a 1/4" or 3/8" Eye Bolt maybe 6"s by the picture. They will have something close that will work for you.
September 11, 200718 yr t looks like a 1/4" or 3/8" Eye Bolt maybe 6"s by the picture. They will have something close that will work for you. It's not a complete eye bolt though, it's more of a "J" shape... In a pinch you could get by with some threaded rod, washers and nuts. I'd be pretty sure that you'll be able to find something that will work at Home Depot, Lowes, Menards (not sure what you have in your area) or Fastenal...
September 11, 200718 yr Author Thanks Guys!...Ill go and check it out tomorrow when I get out of my Biology class. Thanks for the help.
September 12, 200718 yr Author Ok, went to the Fastenal place today they told me they didnt carry it so I went to the Lowes. Was Lucky to find this thing and thanked my lucky six I didnt have to go anywhere else. Here is what I got, you guys think it will work? Also here is the camper top im getting. Just want to clearify this is a gen 2.
September 12, 200718 yr That should do the trick just fine! definately got long enough thread... how many didya get? I run 4 on mine, 2 front and 2 back per side, I'm sure that you could use 2 in a pinch, maybe 1 front left and 1 back right just to get ya back to Lowes...

September 13, 200718 yr Author This is a second gen camper right, he said it came off his dads 85 brat but I wanted to check here to make sure. Didnt want to drive 30 miles to find out it will fit a 78 model. Thanks.
September 14, 200718 yr Author Looks very simular to the one that was on my '84. Thanks Tom, just wanted to confirm it with someone else. The guy is a Jeep person is why I was asking. Gonna be leaving here in a few to go and pick it up. The remains of that hurricane is coming through Tennessee right now so it makes for a rainy trip.
September 14, 200718 yr The remains of that hurricane is coming through Tennessee right now so it make for a rainy trip. At least the bed will stay a bit drier on the return trip! All the best!
September 14, 200718 yr Author Well the J hooks I bought were useless they didnt line up with the holes on the camper so I took the shoe strings out of my steel toes and tied her down for the 2 minute ride up the road to get some tie down straps. Well heres the pics, the old girl cleaned up real nice; I didn't want to do much since it was pouring the rain at the time but I got the mildew off of it. Also a quick note, I went to pick this up in Harriman which where the number 1 subaru dealer in the state is. So many it would make you Washington guys feel at home. Heres the count: 1 two door loyale. 1 GL-10 Sedan 2 2 door imprezas 1 H6 Outback Sedan 23 First Gen Legacies. Thanks for you guys' help on this.
September 14, 200718 yr Looks great! sorry the J-hooks didn't work out, I guess they probably differ from manufacturer to manufacturer...
September 15, 200718 yr Author Looks great! sorry the J-hooks didn't work out, I guess they probably differ from manufacturer to manufacturer... Oh well I just took them back to lowes before I went to work today. I had never even heard of the manufactuer ill post the name of it when I get up in the morning. Its got a 1800 number on the back, I should call and still see if they are in business. All I need to do is get some plexi-glass for the back and the side window and Ill be in good shape. Its got a light in the topper, how in the world would one wire that thing up?
