Strange squeek

Featured Replies

Hey all, I have a 93 impreza. When I am traveling at freeway speed it has been starting to do something strange, the car will be going along fine and then there is a squeek that sound like a belt and the car lurches, just for a split second. The frequency of the occurances is starting to increase, I am assuming this is a pully going bad. Does anyone have any idea where to look first? I can't reproduce it when I am sitting in the driveway running the rpm's up. Would the water pump do something like this if it were going out? Thanks.

Hrmmmm

Since its vauge ill throw things out there.

Is this with the AC on or off?

Is this a stick or auto

Do all the tires match?

Are the tires properly inflated.

Is the car green?

Any work done recently ?

Had similar problem with my 99 Forester. The squeek and lurch only occurred when the air conditioning was on. Replaced that belt and all symptoms disappeared

More details, it's a 5 speed, yes the tires and tread are all the same, it is green good guess, and it does it all of the time, though it makes an almost backfire type of noise when the AC is on. Sorry about the vaugness of the problem description, it's just hard to verbalize the sounds in writing. Recent work, I resealed the oil and water pump, New t-belt, new plugs and wires. One other thing, the AC unit was unplugged when I bought it.

I'm thinking its got something to do with the AC.

Check the main pulley on the engine and make sure that it is tight and not wobbling.

OK, maybee I will take the belt off of the AC unit all together and see what happens, I will also check the main pully. I am about to head up north about 45min drive so this will be a good test of the AC being disconnected.

Thanks,

Shawn

Yeah, I thought that was pretty funny you through that question in there about the color and you were right. Also I am figuring since the weather is starting to cool down I am in no great hurry to do anything with the AC unit.

Actually AC works with the defroster.
