What...the...hell... A/C Belt mystery.

Featured Replies

What exactly do you think would cause the A/C belt to turn inside out when running? I have an inboard A/C compressor.

My wife came in the other day saying her A/C doesn't work and it squeeks when she turns it on. So I go out there and tell her to start the car, and turn on the A/C, I was so focused on the clutch, to make sure the compressor is spinning. I didn't notice the belt at first. I see the clutch sorta engage the compressor, the squeeking begins, and the compressor slows down to a stop. I then notice the A/C belt is literally inside out. The belt teeth are on the outside and the belt backing/band is on the pulleys. So yesterday I take the belts off and put them back on. Tight as I can. Then today. The belt twists around inside out again. WTF?!?

Bad Belt. Bad tensioner. Bad pully.

That did happened twice on my White EA82 Wagon, and the Cause was that the Belt was Firmly Overtighten... :-\ ...I have the Habit to Re-Check everything, and sometimes I make Too Much Torque on the Wrenchs... Overtighten things... Well...

Half inch of Free Twist on the Belts, shall be Enough.

could also be a pulley alignment issue, you may need to shim the pulleys, in industrial applications if pulleys are misaligned , the belts tend to ride up one side of the pulley then roll.

The new ribbed flat belts are differnt then v belts in that aspect. i tend to over tighten them myself.
