October 9, 200718 yr 87 GL Wagon Ok.......So I got the old one out, new one in...now obviously I've missed something. My blower fan doesn't work, and I can't push in the heater controls, they just won't move at all. My defrost will push in but won't stay, but right underneath it, the cruise will stay on. I know it's not something blocking the heater controls since I pulled that part of the dash out & it's got an electrical box attached to the back, nothing could be blocked, so there must just be a wire I didn't connect? I'm hoping someone will know something so I don't have to just pull the entire dash again and look for loose wires, especially since there are some that were loose when I started that must be for options my car doesn't have. Also, where's the speedometer cable attach to the dash? It came loose when I pulled the dash and I can't see where it plugs back in. Anyway, though, the instructions on the USRM are great! They made it really easy, I just obviously overlooked some stuff..
October 10, 200718 yr There are no tricks with the pushbuttons. Something must be interefering - mounting screw? Stress on the assembly? The latching action is not electric or vacuume powered.
October 10, 200718 yr Also, where's the speedometer cable attach to the dash? . It should be on the back of the speedometer, centered on the pivot of the needle.

Should be a vacuum line to that switch control. Did you lift the dashboard? You can feel the speedometer cable input by reaching up from under the dash. Easier than you'd think to set it back inplace.
October 10, 200718 yr Even if there's no vacuum to the switch control, they should all press & latch like normal. You can remove the section of the dash right above the steering wheel & cluster to remove/check that switch control, rather than pulling the entire dash. -Dave

My Ac selector switch is totally buggered, the ears for the mounting screws are all rent asunder and I have the parts I need, just not the gumption to tear into it when I can make my switch work for me... but lately the switch has been failing once in a while, so if I can do it THIS way I just might go for it.
October 10, 200718 yr Author Ok, thanks everyone. I got up off my lazy a** and dug back into with a fresh mind and got it worked out. I didn't have the blower motor plugged in was one problem. Used some more patience and found where the speedometer cable goes. The heater controls....it has something to do with how tight the control box (right behind the dash) is to the dash switches. Not sure how it got loose since I didn't have to mess with it to take of the dash, but, the more I messed with it the more the 20 year old plastic kept breaking. So I ended up taking the outside buttons off the ones I really really need, like defrost. Now I can just poke the inner buttons. I couldn't figure out, without replacing little tiny plastic parts all over the place, how to get the thing to work right. Like I said, the more I prodded & explored, the more things I broke. At this point, my cars interior is a bit worse for wear, but I've got the important things: speedometer, heat, blower.

October 10, 200718 yr How????? To remove the dash above the steering wheel: -remove the two screws right above the cluster -On the left side of the dash, remove the plastic plugs in the corners of the rear defrost panel, then remove the two screws in the corners (not required, but makes it easier). -Remove the two screws in the heater controls (mirrored position to the rear defrost panel) -Remove the screw under the rear wiper control, and the one on the other side of the wheel Around the heater vents are tabs you'll have to pry out before the rest of it pops out. Then you'll have to unhook the ~8? connectors to stuff on the dash. The heater controls will stay hanging to stuff behind the dash. Behind the heater controls is a small hole to match a plug on the controls to help support it. It could be that's not lined up causing it to bind on stuff (MTSuby) Putting back together is opposite of disassembly. It can sometimes be fun pushing the connectors back in so theres enough room to fit the dash back on. -Dave
