axle

I blew up a axle in the rear of my wagon I got the part from the wheel off but the other part on the diff doesnt want to come off please give me some help with this thanks

I couldn't get mine off the diff either. I won't bother telling you to knock the pin out since you got the other side off. But if it won't pry off, I would try heating it up. It might be enough to expand the axle and break some of the rust free thats probably holding the splines together.

PB Blaster, Liquid Wrench or Deep Creep that thang. (WD40 is NOT a suitable alternative, those others are way better). soak it as much/often as you can, couple times a day. tap it with a hammer/chisel to try and knock the bonds loose. and heat is a good thing too, you'll want to heat the axle cup as quick as possible and try to yank it off before the stub begins to heat.

haha, Yes, definately get some kind of penetrating oil on there. But let me tell you, besides spraying in where the roll pin goes, its a pain to get anything where the splines are. What you can try is, since your replacing the axle anyway, is to maul that metal shield cup on the end of the axle. If you pry that back, or destroy it, you might be able to get some more penetrator in there on the splines.

as a last resort you could remove the other axle, unbolt the 4 axle bolts, and 3 diff hanging bolts/nuts and drop the thing off the car. working on it off the car should give you easy access to "persuade" it.

someone else posted the trick of putting a dab of thick grease (RTV?) on one end of the roll pin hole, letting it cure, then filling the roll pin hole with penetrant. This would help if you let it sit for a day or five before working on it.

Dave, thats a real cool idea, good suggestion!

I had this issue. I used a blow torch on the DOJ cup (not the diff stub, as I didn't want to wreck the seals.) Then hit them off and it was easy(ish.) Didn't damage the seals at all either.

I've had to give up and just replace both pieces. Sometimes, that sucker just ain't coming off.

i used a cutoff tool, (a small 3 inch thin air grinder) and sliced the doj just enough to crack it , taking care not to grind to deep so you ruin the splines. and used a good sharp chisle and a v bfh

BFH, Liquid Wrench, and a torch in the right combination will usually do it. Could try using a slide hammer of some kind too, make some sort of half rump roast disposable attachment and weld it to the axle cup, then yank on that mother.

If you knock out the inner grease cup in the bottom of the DOJ you will have access to the E10 torx bolt that holds the stub in the diff. You can then pull that bolt and the whole DOJ+stub will slide out of the diff. Then working on a bench you can pound out the stub from the DOJ cup.

If you need to borrow an E10, I have one and I'm in West Linn...
