January 30, 200818 yr Does anyone know when the timing chain needs to be replaced in a 2003 H6 Outback or when/if it needs inspection? I've heard if a timing chain breaks it creates a big problem. I'm at 105,000 miles. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.
January 30, 200818 yr Howdy dogg here are a couple posts on the timing chain in our H6 Outbacks I have 75 Kmi. on mine. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=84652 http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=83532&highlight=timing+chain http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=82304&highlight=timing+chain I turned these and others up for you with "Timing Chain" in the search box. Hope this helps.
January 30, 200818 yr Timing chains give lost and lots of hints that they are going bad. With all the sesnors on these things, I would be surprised if it didnt throw a code of some kind. Usually chains jump a tooth. They have to be seriously worn (read noisey) to break. My guess would be 180 - 220,000 miles. nipper
January 31, 200818 yr Yes I think I have seen where soob says the timing chain is good for the lifetime of the engine. It is really not practicable to inspect like the timing belts. However yes, if it does break bent valves/dinged pistons are likely. I think soob went with a timing chain (vs belt) on the EZ30 to save a little space whilst shoehorning the engine into the chassis.

Those photos are pure techno porn. With Chains it's not the chain that wears out it's the guides and the oil pressure system that tightens them that goes first. This would be the best argument yet I have seen for a strict diet of clean high quality synthetic.

These have more antiwear and other additves than PCMO (passenger car motor oils), which could only benefit the timing chain mechanisms!
