EA82 shaking at idle

Recommended Posts

I have an ’85 GL wagon that I just put a rebuilt engine in. The engine came from CCR. I bought it about a year ago and back problems prevented me from installing it until this year (Jan ’08).

This is a carbed (Hitachi) engine and yes I have a Weber on the way. I have checked for vacuum leaks and replaced pcv, cap, rotor, plugs and wires. Timing is set at 8 deg btdc.

The thing shakes when it is below 1200 rpm (idling) but seems to smooth out above that. I don’t know if it lacks power because it is new and my old engine definitely lacked power. It does run better than the old one except for idle.

I have searched this problem several times but found nothing specific about what I am experiencing.

I appreciate any help on things to check or try.

I tried to shoot a vid clip with my phone. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QCFTE15ZkUw It shakes the whole car when idling.

I know you mentioned vaccum leaks already, but my '85 had that exact problem- and it was a vaccum leak. The engine still ran fine, but it shook the car at idle. That car has a Weber on it.

Yes, I had hoped it was that simple but I can't find a leak. I've used the carb cleaner spray trick and don't find a thing.

For the benefit of others that may have a similar problem here is what I found. I feel like a ********************* but it boiled down to a vacuum leak. I know I checked for that but with all that Hitachi support crap in the way I just missed it.

I took the covers off the timing belts and verified it was on correctly. One belt was a little loose so I tightened it up.

I did a compression check and they were all 150 psi and above.

Then I began removing the vacuum operated accessories and plugging vacuum ports. When I started the engine it ran smooth and idled perfectly.

I ordered the Weber adapter from Jim Hilton (bigjim5551212) and will be rid or that Hitachi once and for all.

Thanks to everyone who made suggestions.

Mark

Hey, I was right about something for once:)

Andy

I bet it's been more than once, you joined USMB didn't you? That's one of the good things I did because my Soob would probably still be under a tarp without the help from this group of great guys.

Thanks again for your input.

Greetings from Crossville. What specific vacuum hose was leaking?

I'm not sure but I think there was one broken off behind the carb to the drivers side. There were quite a few old brittle hoses and I was in the process of changing them when I decided to take all that stuff off and plug all the ports. That is one of the best things I've done since replacing the engine. The Weber is going on as soon as the adapter gets here.

  • 2 weeks later...

The wagon passed emissions today. It failed miserably the first time so I waited to put the Weber on before trying again.

Now I just gotta figure out why it bogs when the secondary opens. It starts and idles fine. There is no shaking like I experienced before. All the extra vacuum stuff is removed and capped.

Here is what I have, 85 GL Wagon, EA82, Weber.

I have spent 2 cans of brake cleaner finding the vacuum leaks and believe I have them all resolved.

It accelerates smoothly and gains RPM right up to the point the secondary opens. At WOT it gets loud and either slows or just barely maintains speed.

I have moved the timing from 8 deg to 12 deg and back.

I have moved the vacuum advance tube from the manifold to the port on the carb and will probably move it back.

There is a kit on the way from bigjim and I will open the carb up and see which jets are actually in there.

I have spent hours looking at threads about the Weber and don't see anything about what I am experiencing. I am open to ideas if anyone would like to throw them at me.

Thanks

Mark

I barely ever even get into the secondary on my Weber when accelerating. Makes for good mileage. My timing is set at 8BTDC. The only emissions stuff left is the PCV system. Vaccum advance is hooked to port at base of carb. I don't know what jets are in it, as it was already in the car when I bought it.

I haven't ever messed with the jets in these, but off the top of my head it sounds like that could be your problem. Others who know more will hopefully chime in.

You might want to start a new thread to get more exposure.

I agree about not getting in to the secondary but the cruise control can't work properly unless it can open the throttle all the way sometimes. It's weird to have the car slow down when the throttle is wide open.

I have taken all the emissions stuff off too. The PCV is all that is left.

There is a ton of information on "Tuning your Weber" and I have made quite a collection of it. I have a folder dedicated to Weber on my PC and keep going over it. I will figure it out eventually with the help of the good folks there on the board.

I had a violent shaking action when my intake manifold gaskets decided to put in for a transfer. You can feel around the base of the manifold to see if it pulls a vacuum.

That part's been cured. Now I'm having trouble with the Weber secondaries. I started a new thread to clairify.

My intake manifold also just took a dive. It was spit out of place. Do you think this indicates another problem, or will simply replacing the gasket solve the problem?

In my case, where and idiot decided to do the "gasket at home" fix, it was. Of course, your case may vary. Have a look at a previous thread of mine for reference.
