December 24, 200322 yr hey all, building up nerve to do a 5spd conversion and have some Q's BTW: 82 GLW w/ EA81 w/ all the bits 1) Clutch assembly, is there a preferred clutch/flywheel set up?
December 24, 200322 yr ust the clutch for the trans, and the flywheel for the trans that you are using. bellhousing grind, the rest of the common info.... take a peek under half of the boards' rides............
December 24, 200322 yr Author thx miles, but didn't completely understand your reply. use an EA81 clutch and flywheel or a basic EA82 clutch & flywheel? and bit of grind on the bell housing..... take a peek under half the boards rides (gallery?) what axle/spline set ups did you guys use?? stock EA81? thx shanonsf
December 24, 200322 yr Author thx Q, EA82 clutch & flywheel, check. I didn't see anything regarding CV/axles & splines....are the stock ea81 CVs compatable..? I thought the 5spd had a different spline count. i got a custom set of CVs that the original 'pioneer' used on his set-up (from donor car). he also put in ea82 frt brakes. is that why he had the custom axls done. Do I have to convert the frt brakes to ea82 also to complete conversion or was that just another 'upgrade'? gracias, shanonsf
December 24, 200322 yr Author thx all, learning here, I have the full time RX 5spd D/R w/ ctr dif & LSD. I believe the splines ARE different in which I will have to go the with custom axle set up & EA82 steering knuckles & brakes....... didn't know that there are different configurations of 5spds thx again shanonsf
December 24, 200322 yr You should use the search function - it will answer ALL your questions. EA82T trannies have 25 splines - regular are 23. GD
December 24, 200322 yr hey when austin and I did his 5spd convo we used the ea81 flywheel and a ea82 clutch dave
December 25, 200322 yr You can use either flywheel - you just have to use the proper PP that goes with it. You need the clutch disc that has the right spline count for the tranny. It's prefereable to use the EA82 flywheel and PP because this allows use of the EA82T or even the XT6 PP which is stronger. GD
December 25, 200322 yr Author thx folks sounds like i should find/source a XT6 (EA82 4wd) clutch kit and PP. Anyone have thiws stuuf lying arounf per chance?? might need the flywheel too............ props all!! shanonsf
December 25, 200322 yr could you get the flywheel re-drilled to fit the XT-6 PP or it the plate to big for the flywheel?
December 25, 200322 yr It can be used one way or another - either with an EA82 flywheel or an XT6 flywheel. Qman has one in his Brat. GD
December 25, 200322 yr since you are using the ea81 motor, the ea82 flywheel is what you will use, but you will have to grind away metal on the bottom of the engine bellhousing, to allow room for the teeth on the flywheel. you will use the ea81 flywheel bolts, although smaller in dia. than the holes themselves. but the flywheel wiss center on the crankshaft anyway you winn also be required to use the ea82 clutch disc and pressire plate to the transmission you are using its possible to use the ea81 flywheel, the pressure plate will bolt up either way, but the ea82 clutch disc(which you must use) may be too big for the ea81 flywheel. search around, its all over the board. but anything you dsont find, just ask
December 25, 200322 yr When searching for the axle information use Bratsrus1 as the user to search by. Some of his recent posts talk about the custom axles he ordered from cvaxles.com.
December 26, 200322 yr Author hey all sounds like the 4wd EA82 clutch & PP are the way to go. Kinda confused, how is the XT6 kits & PP different? Ideally, which is best and most compatable? thx all- shanonsf
December 26, 200322 yr the xt6 uses a lighter flywheel and a stronger pressure plate. but that and ea82 fits the same i will be using an ea82 flyeheel and pressure plate with my xt6 transmission
