July 10, 200817 yr how does anyone feel about the haynes repair manuals? are they good? especially for the 97 legacy L ? thanks
July 10, 200817 yr I like them. I think they are a little more user friendly than most. I've used em since the 70's. They don't have everything but then their $20 25 not a couple of hundred like a factory manual. My .2
July 10, 200817 yr i think they are excellant.i have one for my 96 Legacy L..the first time i did my clutch i went entirely by the haynes repair manual and only ran across 1 minor glitch in the steps....
July 11, 200817 yr Haynes manuals BLOW. (I would say dead bears, but the last one was moving) You would do better looking out the nearest window, and *thinking* about your vacation, than looking in a Haynes manual for anything more complicated than checking the tires.
July 11, 200817 yr i think they are excellant.[...] Haynes manuals BLOW.[...] In my opinion, Haynes manuals fall somewhere between the two extremes expressed above. Common sense should always prevail -- if any procedure in a manual has you scratching your head, check it with another source, including here. We're not infallible (maybe I should speak only for myself ), but neither are those who write even the factory service manuals (there are errors, omissions, and unclear language in them as well).

July 11, 200817 yr As a "new" Subaru owner I found the one that came with the car very useful and surprisingly informative. As a career mechanic, I quickly outgrew the Haynes and hunted down the Factory Service Manuals.
