1986 gl hatchback tail light

Featured Replies

Hey does anyone know if there is a trick to get the tail light lense off a 86 gl hatchback. Took out the two screws, still fills tight, don't know if I should just pull it off. Wondering if I am missing a step . Thanks Rayban1.........

The whole tail light assembly has to be removed to get the lens off IIRC. All the bolts are accesible from behind the plastic bits in the cargo area as well as the bulbs if you are just needing to change some of those.

Yes, the tail light must be removed as a unit, the lense does not come off. After you remove all necessary screws, there is some kind of very sticky tar-like substance that holds it on. It would probably stay on forever without the screws. It is quite difficult, more difficult than you would expect, to break the bond of the 1/2 tar 1/2 superglue 1/2 construction adhesive black stuff. Use a flat bar or wide gasket scraper to pry the unit off and you should be good to go.

if you have a small propane torch heat up the back size, it will loosen the bond on the glue. if not a heat gun or a hair dryer works as well.

Now there's an idea!
