I have a 92 loyale 4wd with 160k miles. The last time I drove it was about 3 weeks ago and it worked fine. I went to drive it today and it wouldn't start. Engine cranks and there is spark. It appears there is no fuel getting to the engine, plugs are dry and don't smell like fuel. Any ideas where to start?

 

I don't think any of the fuses or fuesable links are bad. I don't hear the fuel pump when the ignition is on so maybe there?

can you hear the fuel pump whurring , its underneth the right rear passengers side , try tapping the pump with a hamer handle, my lil loyale does that all the time

Old pumps can get jammed up - smack the pump with something. That's common of all centrifugal fuel pumps. Old gas and condensate can jam them up.

Also, you can connect the green connectors under the hood near the wiper motor, and turn the key to On. That will make the fuel pump pulse on and off, which is a good time to smack it and see if it starts humming.

ECU - but that should only be an issue if you've had electrical issues - like crossing the wires while jumping (don't ask how i know!!!)

Well....

 

I tried knocking on the fuel pump with the hammer and nothing happened. So i found the test light and there appears to be no power reaching the pump. The fuses are good and so are the fuesable links, I checked today. I guess I will start looking for other problems in the electrical system. Any suggestions on where to look?

were the test jumpers connected because you wont get power if the car isnt running / jumpers connected at least thats how my brat is

The SPFI will cycle the pump with the engine off if the test connectors are plugged together.

 

Check the fuel pump relay. It will be with a set of 4 relays above the fuse box under the drivers side kick panel.

The fuel pump relay is actually above the ecu next to the ignition relay on a Loyale, not in the bank of four relays above the fuse box. Someone posted a photo of the pair here a couple weeks ago.

Yeah - I can never remember exactly. It will be next to the big square brown one then - above the ECU. Most of the relays are around that general area near the drivers kick panel.

Thanks for the info. It appears there were 2 problems at once. No power to the pump and the pump needed to be whacked a few times. I fixed the power problem (bad connection at the pump) and pump still wouldn't run. I removed the pump to test it more easily than under the car hit it with the hammer handle a few time and it started working. I re-assembled everything than the car started up just fine.
