Unless there is some miracle product out there (similiar to the ones you see on TV at night, but that actually work), you will have to have a paint job. You might have comprehensive coverage which would cover the repair - I know I had my last truck painted by Farmers after it was keyed - on the THIRD day I owned it, no less, it didn't even have 150 miles on it. :mad: Don't go to the local shop the insurance co. recommends if you can help it, unless the local shop is a Subaru dealer or Subaru specialist- the paint won't match the rest of the car. It might not be apparent now, but in a couple years it will be glaringly apparent. I found that out the hard way. If you can't get an immediate shop appointment, ask the shop what to do with the scratch. Some want a heavy coat of wax in it to keep the rain and dirt out, others want it left alone. If you clearcoat it they'll have to sand much more off, so ask first. Twisting the neck of the perp might seem the right thing to do, but I heartily recommend burning at the stake after pulling out all their teeth and nails with red-hot pliers and no local anesthesia. griffenrider Posted August 27, 2008 Share Posted August 27, 2008 Unless you're getting it repainted in the next few days, IMHO, you should put something over the scratch to prevent car-cancer. Once rust starts under the paint, there's really no way to get rid of it without either sanding everything off and starting over, or replacing the panel. put a line of pastewax in there like its caulk - it'll keep the water out and is easy to remove when you go for the actual repair. HF is a good chemical, but I'm not sure if it works fast enough for you - whats the glory in knowing the guy'll be gone in a few months when you don't get to see it happen? njdrsubaru Posted August 27, 2008 Author Share Posted August 27, 2008 thanks guys! i'm gonna compound off as much as i can, then i can apply touch up pain to the deep parts of it... i am thinking about repainting it at the end of the yr i just dont want it to rust.. also my deductible is $1000 so its not even worth going through insurance, since maaco could repaint the whole car for 600 bucks... ugh it sucks cuz now i have an ugly deep scratch till i get the car repainted. And No i still have to find out who it is, and this friday i am staying up all night watching my car and seeing if anyone comes close.
