will 84 GL 1800 engine fit into a 87 SW

Featured Replies

Hey everybody

will 84 GL 1800 engine fit into a 87 SW. or is everything differnt. SC

The '84 uses an EA81 engine, and the '87 wagon uses an EA82 engine -- which is actually a little larger, so the EA81 won't have any trouble fitting, however, the radiator hoses are on different places (I think), and the batteries are on opposet sides of the engine and such. You'd have to redo some wiring and hoses and such, I think, but the two engines do share the same mounting and such, so it can be done without any special adaptors mechanically... I've never done it, but there are people on here who have.

I did it on the wifes car. runs great, she all:grin:. Is your 87 carbed or FI? When you search, think along the lines of putting a newer tranny into an older vehicle, IE. you may have to remove some metal for the flywheel to fit. You may also have to build or mod the pitch stopper. ALSO, you may find a mismatch with the distributor and coil, hitchi with hitchi and ND with ND. keep them the same, DON'T mix = Burned parts!!! Power steering is another headache. AS for the AC, I took it off (bad compressor) and theres not enough room as it would hit the battery.

Thanks for the link Subiemech, I have to learn to search better,

It is looking like a doable project. there is an 87 5 speed SW for sale for 350 around here,

IS ths correct. Pull 87 motor, drop in e81 motor, it will hook to the 87 trans?

There was some post about clutch slipping that I did not understand.

Will exhaust pipes will line up with minimal welding?

I can probaly figure the power steering SC

One of the main concerns is that of the fuel system.

You do not say if the 87 is 4wd

If it is, it is a carbed engine

if it's 2wd it's SPFI (fuel injected)

One having an ECU (2wd , SPFI) the other does not.

(note you also do not give a location, therefore this may not

be true in your part of the planet)

If it is SPFI, I would recco going with the GD conversion.

(GD = General Disdorder, he has writen an excellent manual for this)

If not I'd go with a Weber and reduce the Hitachi problems

assiociated with the polution controls for that year.

Again if you are in the Honduras please ignore this post.

I need to do this as cheap as possible. and since the hitachi is running, it will stay for now

So the transmission of the 87 will bolt to my 84 engine peachy keen right? SC
