I'm thinkin of 3" dia or 3.5" coaxials in the dash...anyone fit those sizes in ok?

The bulk of the sound will be from the rear 5.25" speakers...more fader..

It's a wheeler so door speakers are out of the question...burble...burble

Besides my screwdrivers ,tire psi guage fits nicely in the pockets..

I used 3.5" in my old 84 wagon for the front, but you can do a 4x6, which is what I plan to do with my 86 hatch.

I've got 4X6 for both fronts in my BRAT. They were free came from my old infinitiG20 parts car, they are pioneers.

The one on driver side is wedged in there sideways, not even using the factory mount bracket with like one nut holding it in place. the passenger side has 3 of the 4 nuts holding it...sounds way better than the old dryed out stock speakers. I still have the factory AM/FM radio and it rocks.

Advice: put in the passenger side one first, cause it is a easier install/cobble job. You will figure out things on that one that will benefit the driver side install, cause it sits crooked on the driver side.

Eliminate the dash speakers and run a better speaker in your doors as the front channel. Add a set of truck box speakers behind the seats as the rear channel and your set.

So I take it you completely misread what I wrote in the thread...

This is a wheeler so the door speakers maybe submerged...and I like using the side pockets for tools,tire psi guage.

I have no room for the box speaker setup in the rear...recovery gear goes there, tools...spare rear axle...( i'm using the the stock location) I'm keeping the rear seat so my son can go wheelin' too...

Ahhh, wish I had seen this earlier. I too have ditched the factory front EA81 speakers for something nicer. Twice actually, with both speaker sizes in question. In both cases, I didn't want to cut corners and risk some annoying vibration after everything was buttoned back up. The 4x6"s sound better, they actually have a little bump where as the 3" speakers are just for mids and highs.

 

I had to redrill the new speaker's chassis for the stock bolt spacing (tip, use the factory speaker's mounting holes as a guide to drill holes in the new speaker).

One easy thing that will improve the overall performance of the speaker is to isolate the front from the back by eliminating gaps and whatnot. I plan to do this using simple foam weather strip tape. It is flexible enough to curve with the outside of the speaker basket, and can be stacked if a little extra thickness is needed.
