Looks like something is cracked on my Beloved 4wd Chaser! It'd be a real shame to let this car die now... Its the best car in the snow I've ever had, even with bald tires!

 

the engine still runs great, its just pouring the coolant directly into the oilpan... I'm guessing its the block :( Poor thing already had some seepage going on before this too, was thinking it was bad HG. I rescued it after it sat for 3 years destined for the crusher the same very month.

 

CCR's prices seem a little steep, especially considering the CAD exchange rate right now.

 

Any suggestions on what options I have? I'm not much of a mechanic but I have access to a shop so long as there's a definitive plan and time frame to work within. 1000 dollar budget MAX to work with too. I saw an 88 Chaser at the wrecker with a blown rad hose, But didn't think it'd be a good candidate since it was likely overheated severely (engine bay was black with coolant and oil residue).

 

I really like how Simple the EA81's are! No ODBI or ODBII BS to deal with... it just works... like my old land cruiser FJ40 I had.

Don't those EA81's have an internal freeze plug that exits into the oil pan???? Someone back me up on this... or not... :rolleyes:

 

Worst case, you should be able to get a used EA81 for way less than $1000. Heck, I have two sitting around, if you're anywhere near Colorado. Pacific Northwest has lots of them -- probably find a whole parts car for $600 if you look a little.

 

Is the chaser what the hatchback was sold as in Canada? I've never heard that name before.

My first Subaru was a '83 GL Chaser and it had blown the freezeplugs in the passenger side head out, which caused there to become massive amounts of coolant into the oil. Pull off the valvecovers and look for the brass freezeplugs chillin in the bottom of the heads. If thats not the problem, could be the headgaskets like stated before or.....

I bet its the freeze plugs. pull the valve covers and you shoould find a little cap in there and a wide open hole. I had that problem when I swapped my 1st EA81 into the Beast. Simple in-car fix :banana:

I'm hoping its the plugs... it would make the most sense, since nearly ALL of the coolant is going into the pan. If it were a crack on the block/head I don't think it would leak that badly.

 

As for the HG's I think one or both needed to be done regardless... we'll cross that bridge when we get to it though.

Yup, Its a two door Hatch, Wikipedia says they called them the Chaser up here in Canadia... Just the GL hatch in the states I think. Its a sweet little car though, With three wheels spinning it goes damn near everywhere!

Finally got around to popping the valve covers off today... as best as I can tell the freeze plugs are seated in tightly... they definitely weren't rattling around in there... guess that rules out that option :(

 

I did notice though that the passenger side head only had 2 of the 3 nuts on the studs... how the hell did it run like that for so long? I didn't see the nut drop out when I took the valve cover off either, that leads me to believe that someone just left it like that and installed the valve cover after.

 

I'll try and get some pictures this week and post them, there was all sorts of gooeyness on the inside of the valve covers.
