SRS questions - replace bolts & computer?

Featured Replies

FSM says to replace the TORX bolts that hold the front air bags. any comments other than "do what the FSM says"? the bolts are more an annoyance driving to pick them up and then subaru will probably want $13 each for a bolt.

anyone have a part number for those bolts? i'd much rather have them show up in my mailbox than go get them.

it also says to replace the computer for the front air bags if the air bags deploy. but i know people replace the air bags and call it a day. wouldn't it have some self-test "i'm okay" detection in there? if it wasn't working properly i'd think it would know it.

2002 OBW H6 VDC, i'm replacing the front bags and seat belts.

reuse the tamper proof torx, and need to replace the airbag control module in the center console.

sensors can be resused they are self resetting. once a airbag module computer blows a bag, it can never be used again.

What he said.

If a sensoe was in the direct line of impact I would replace it. If it wasnt and everything is OK the SRS light wont be on.

awesome thanks folks!

why use TORX bolts anyway? how many regular bolts actually fall out (not counting all the stripped aluminum engine stuff!)

and why would they make the computer self-destruct?!

They want you to replace the bolts because of the forces exerted on them during the deployment of the airbag. I'm sure you risk some weakening of the bolts sheer strength, but I can't imagine it's really worth replacing them given their use. Worse case if the airbag deploys again and those bolts break, the bag falls to the floor after it's done it's job instead of staying attached to the steering wheel, but I highly doubt those bolts would break.
