horrid Cold starting

Featured Replies

well I didnt want to hijack someone else's post on cold starting so I fingered I'd start my own:

started my car this am.. -9 F outside..it was down to -30 F last night.

now for my car.. my sig. says what it is. (hitachi POS)...

pumped the pedal 3 times, started it and it idled at like 350 rpms and felt like it was runnin on 3 cylinders. reved it u a lil bit, seemed to run a lil better but it was still running ruff (car was bouncin around) after the car sputters for about 2 min, it revs it self back up to normal idle and runs great...

and my fast idle hasnt worked since I got the car.

Question 1: Fast idle must be busted, is there something that breaks on it witha hitachi?

Question 2: my choke doesnt seem like it works either. Do the acutators go out in them and how fixable is it?

Question 3: anyone havea mechanical choke wired in on a EA82 hitachi?

Have you tested the diaphram on your air breather tube to see if it is closing the flap and diverting warm air to the carb? If it isn't, the carb could be icing up, which could be part of the problem.

Mine does the same thing basically.

I have a feeling that it's related to my low compression in the #1 cylinder. It's not getting warm enough for good combustion right away.

You might check your compression.

alright.. thanks guys..

northguy - I doubt its icing in the carb. I checked the vacumn deal last year and it was working fine. My car only does it when its very first started.. runs like **** for about a minute and then something kicks in (prolly the choke) and it runs good

If I can find a compression tester to use, I'ma do it this weekend..

Comp testing is just pulling the plug out and screwing in the fitting to the tester and cranking the engine correct?

Wow Torxx, that's what mine does..everything's great after just a little warmup:D .
