2wd Axels on a 4wd?

Featured Replies

My 1987 DL single range 4wd takes 2wd front axels, not the 4wd axels. WTF is up with that?

not sure what kind of vehicle you have - EA81 or EA82? i'm not familiar with DL's? front or rears?

anyway, EA82 axles should be interchangeable between 2WD/4WD and right to left, what problem are you having?

the difference is turbo axles and non turbo, they have a different spline count.

a FWD non turbo and 4WD non turbo should interchange

a FWD turbo and 4WD turn should interchange.

most likely it's a turbo/non turbo difference, not a 2WD/4WD thing.

do you mean the axle is the wrong length, spline count is wrong or something else?

Are you buying them at NAPA? I just went through this with them. Their database is wrong, I bought the ones for it said my car uses and the were the wrong splines, I had to buy the ones for the automatic car to fit my 5 speed.

Count the splines and make sure get the same ones even if the parts guys computer says you are wrong.

The car is an EA82, went through Schucks, and the issue I had was the hub part of the axel that attahes to the stub sticking out of the side of the trans did not fit the supposed 4wd axels but the 2wd axels fit perfectly.

Anyways, I got the car fixed now.......

.....after having to order 3 sets of axels to finally get some that fit. :banghead:

Pretty much the same thing happened to me at NAPA, we had to count the splines and order the ones for an automatic car. Evidently the rebuilder is getting confused about part numbers.

Yeah. Every store I've gone to except for the dealer has the wrong stuff in their computer. You have to buy by spline count, not what type of car they think it's for.... :-\

Just to make this thread clear for anyone else.

YOU GOT TURBO AXLES!

Shucks database might be screwy, but when it comes down to it, the diffenrece isn't a 4wd vs. 2wd issue.

All non-turbos, 2 or 4wd have a 23 spline stub hole.

Here is were it gets tricky, and the 2 vs. 4wd action comes in.

From 85-87, Turbo, 2wd automatic trans(3at) used a 23 spline axle, just llike the non turbos. All Manual trans Turbos used a 25 spline axle.

From 88-90, ALL TURBO, Manual or automatic(4EAT) use 25 spline axles

Bottom line, if you don't have a turbo, you need 23 spline axles.

so my 90 Loyale RS part time 4wd non turbo needs axle part # 95AC-23 (23 spline) on transmission number AW-TW 75F5?

and a 1989 XT6 4eat fwd is also 23 spline?

I think you see where I'm heading with this...
