February 7, 200917 yr Hi, I have a 1.8L EJ18 Impreza. I want to go turbo. Do I (a)Remove ej18 and replace with ej20t (b)Use a combination of ej18 and ej20t I am young and want to do this for fun and experience.. whats the best way?
February 7, 200917 yr if you don't get what yo'ure looking for here, trying NASIOC, those folks are doing this kind of stuff all the time. there's not as much turbo experience here. i'd probably just drop the EJ20T in there. i'd be more concerned about engine management than anything else. EGT's, etc.
February 8, 200917 yr whats easy, drop in the EJ20 and wiring, etc. more time consuming and tedious is swapping the EJ20 heads onto a non-turbo short block, which can be done/has been done but then you need to measure your compression ratio, and get a custom tune for it which = alot more $$$$. put in the EJ20 and enjoy. take it from some one who has done this.
February 9, 200917 yr Here's another vote for doing a complet EJ20G swap. Any time you can run an existing, proven, reliable setup, you're better off. A stock EJ20G will make your impreza absolutely fly compared to what it can do now, and it will do so without any headaches or reliability concerns. A turboed EJ18, even if done exceptionally well (major $$$ and time), will get you about the same power but will be under more stress to do it and will not have the reliability or longevity. This is exactly the same reason that most people have stopped messing with the EA82T in the loyales and have started doing EJ22 swaps instead.
February 9, 200917 yr +1 on NASIOC but know this... there are a few pretty high powered EJ18 turbo cars out there... the cylinder walls are thicker then the EJ20 or 22... so they can take quite a bit of boost. Search the Mermaid:headbang:
