GREENSUBIE Posted February 20, 2009 Share Posted February 20, 2009 one of my friends has a 2000 outback i dont know as much about the newer subarus as i do the older, but he was telling me that his engine just went out i asked questions. he said the car just stoped the engine wouldnt run. so he went to do an compression test and said that one side of the engine was getting compression and the other side wasnt niether cylinder. what would cause no compression on one side?? davebugs Posted February 20, 2009 Share Posted February 20, 2009 Don't know I never worked on the old ones and I send heads out to be fixed. You gotta look for the original cause though. TB skip a few teeth? Cam pulley? Something caused the wreck. Something had to happen to wipe out valves in more than one cylinder - it's not like you just dropped one valve. johnceggleston Posted February 20, 2009 Share Posted February 20, 2009 would the cam shaft be suspect? obviously if the belt slips on that side you could get bent valves but i would have thought low compression, not no compression. what, if anything could the cam shaft do to cause this? davebugs Posted February 20, 2009 Share Posted February 20, 2009 ej22 in place of a 2000 2.5 SOHC - I don't know about that swap. Think it would be ugly. I do have an engine here not torn down (bad bearings) that has heads, etc. Intake is already off. Let me know if you think you need parts and I can look at tearing it down. Cougar Posted February 21, 2009 Share Posted February 21, 2009 (edited) Most likely a broken timing belt caused the trouble. It looks like this is an interference engine so bent valves and perhaps other damage occured. If your friend wants to fix this it may be best to replace the entire head with a new one. Check the compression on the other side to see if something is needed to be done on that side also.
