I'm finally glad I found a good forum!

 

Here's the story: I picked up a 1986 GL 1.8 4x4 for 400 bucks this past weekend. 236000 miles but it runs great, all except for it has a ridiculous idle. When you first start it up cold, it's at 4000 rpm and after it warms up it's at 2000-3000. Any ideas? :-\

if your Subie is Carbureted, I Believe it has Problems with a Stickin` Choke.

Could you give more Details of your Subie? ... Pics?

a fewmore details would definatly help, but it almost sounds like the idle screw is set high.

Is it carb, or efi /??

Yeah, details would help.

If its idling that high cold, it poses a hazard to the engine.

If your Subaru is cxarbureted these might be a solution:

Try shooting some carb cleaner into and round the carb.

Once you've cleaned up the carb a bit and it still idles that high,

try tapping the throttle a few times.

The throttle or the choke may just be a bit sticky.

If this doesn't work, check your idler screw, it may be set too high.

 

If your rig is efi, I have no clue.

Yeah it's carb'd...

 

I messed around with the idler screw and it kept wanting to die, so i moved it back up to 2000 rpm. I gotta go to work but i'll try carb cleaner later.

Vaccuume leaks can mess you up too, loose or worn throttle plate bushings ?/ if you cant get it to idle down than its probably a vac leak, i had one subie that the carburator kept coming loose on , also check the screws on top of the carb, the ones that hold it together

I cleaned the carb out and poked around it for a bit today but I couldn't find anything so I'm going to take it to our local subaru specialty shop and see if they can find anything.

 

Also, how much do you think it would cost to straight-pipe it? The exhaust has some nasty leaks and I don't care about the noise.
