bolting a tire together...

Featured Replies

Last year I lent a set of my tractor tires for my subaru to friend so he could have them on his demo derby pickup. One of the tires ended up getting torn right across the treads when they tried to load the truck on the trailer without ramps. The torn section made it so if I tried to simply put an inner tube in the tire with would have bulged the tube/tire outwards and blown the inner tube. That tire was 80 bucks a pop (literally). However, I am poor.So I am bolting an old tire's tread to the tire on the inside. The tire I used was an old 165/80/13 tire off one of my old subaru wheels I had around. The old subaru tire the sidewall was torn open.So I bring out my jig saw and cut the sidewalls away from the thread. It was like cutting through butter. The tread inside my tractor tire will be secured by 12 carrage bolts with rubber epoxied over the tops. Then I will have an inner tube inside the combo to hold air. the tractor tires are offroad only so maybe the bolts sticking through the tire will give it even more traction. I will take pics tommarow after I finish it up.Didn't quite have enough time to buy the bolts before the shops closed. Oh well.

Oh yea, in my haste to get the project done I neglected to remove the tire from the wheel before I cut the tread off.Any idea of how to remove the sidewalls from the rim? Will burning the rubber off damage the steel wagon wheel?I was thinking about taking my propane torch and just burning through the tire at the bead so it comes off..

I would just have your friend, who destroyed the tire in the first place, replace it.

he got me a free subaru parts car instead.
