March 15, 200917 yr Ok, so my 1998 OBS, 5MT, 183k is making some noise somewhere from center to the rear. It only noticable on 1st and 2nd gear. When you let go the gas, you will hear something like "wo wo wo wo." It doesn't happen with 3rd and up, only in 1st and 2nd. It goes away if the clutch is in and the most funny thing is it just happens out of the blue. I was driving it alright for the whole morning till this afternoon. I don't recall doing anything stupid it just happened all of a sudden. my friend said it sounds like some bearing from the rear diff. I'm wondering if you guys have any ideas. thanks
March 15, 200917 yr IS your driveline rubbing your exhaust? Happens alot, the exhaust gets pushed up a little, combined with when under deceleration the trans shifts slightly on it's mounts. Just enough to make em rub. look for rub marks on the driveshaft.
March 15, 200917 yr Author Is it an AWD?Do you have 4 similar tires? Or different ones? Yes it is 4WD, and it has same tires. And there is absolutely NO warning light at all in anyways (No 4WD light, no CEL). And like I said it was fine for the whole morning/noon and it just suddently start making noise.

March 15, 200917 yr check the transmission mount and the carrier bearing. Any mysterious high speed (subtle) vibration that comes and goes? nipper
March 15, 200917 yr Author check the transmission mount and the carrier bearing. Any mysterious high speed (subtle) vibration that comes and goes? nipper No, everything above 3rd acts like it should. only 1st and 2nd when you feel the most eng. braking (when everyone' head is all over the place) then the noise comes.:-\
March 15, 200917 yr check tires, rear end grease, carrier bearing. Sometimes when you cant trace a noise you have toi wait for it to get louder to find it. nipper
March 15, 200917 yr But that only happens on 1st and 2nd gear. If I get it up to 3rd it is nice and quiet. More drastic torque is applied to the mounts in 1st and 2nd. I'll bet if you go fast, like over 60 in 4th, then drop an agressive, engine braking downshift to 3rd, you will here it too.

I am trying to see if I pull the 4WD plug will that help the issue. By the way, I can't seems to find the 4WD fuse... anyone would give me a pointer? Thanks Edited March 15, 200917 yr by vincentmoy Ask for help
March 15, 200917 yr That's what I thought. I am trying to see if I pull the 4WD plug will that help the issue. By the way, I can't seems to find the 4WD fuse... anyone would give me a pointer? Thanks The AWD in Manual transmissions are purely mechanical. There is no fuse to disable it. That is only on auto trans cars. just get under the car and look for spots were either the exhaust or it's shielding is too close to the driveshaft. Look for wear marks on the driveshaft
March 17, 200917 yr Author So, as sudden as it appears, it just suddently stops... or at least it's not as noticeable as the past couple days.... :-\ Cars....
