Goofy RS Clutch

Featured Replies

First of all my clutch does not slip at all. It is difficult to describe really how it operates. When releasing it, it feels like it has two different release points. It feels like it releases slowly and I usually end up riding the clutch. Its more of a nuisance than anything. I let a good friend of mine drive it and he said it felt like the pressure plate was not active at all. When I bought the Impreza, the dealer told me they put a clutch in it. "If" that was true, I think it had an aftermarket/performance pressure plate and they used a Subaru clutch. Anyone else help me diagnose this? Its really weird.

do you have a cable clutch or hydraulic?...im thinking cable.....I dont know if the hydraulic clutches are the same...but on my 96 legacy at the end of the clutch pedal down under the dash there is a spring that keeps the pedal feel the same as the pressure plate wears....i suppose there is a chance this spring could have broken...I had my buddy drive my legacy and he said my clutch feels weird...and I just put a brand new clutch kit in it and clutch cable...It turned out the spring was broken...I never really got around to replacing it because all it does is keep the pedal feel the same....Thats all i can think of at the moment....

Thanks for the advice Evo. My clutch is hydraulic so I'm not sure if I would have that spring or not. I really doubt it though. Its not biggie, its not slipping so I'm not complaining.

Thanks again.

Yeah I know what you mean by wierd. Mine felt like I had to push the pedal down like 4 inches before it actually started to disengage the clutch. Then that stupid spring broke and all was good, lol. That spring also holds the clutch pedal against a little button that disengages cruise when the pedal is pressed.

I guess you could also try bleeding it....I dont really see how air could get in the system though if it was not opened...:-\

that would be my approach too, after checking, lubricating the pivots of the clutch pedal, fork area, check the spring is there, and the dust boot cover is not dislodged.

My clutch is a little different on my RS as well. Sounds very similar to what yours does. Maybe it's just an RS thing? I dunno:-\

Well that does make things interesting. The clutch fluid is fine, I put a new slave cylinder on it in November. One of the techs at the dealership drove it and thought it was really weird too. I will give it some looking over this weekend when I get some time.

I do have a squeak when I push in on my clutch. I greased the point at which the slave cylinder nipple pushes on the work but that didn't seem to help. Its hard to diagnose inside the vehicle but I think its down inside the tranny.

My 92 SS had very similar symptoms, its hydralic clutch too. It squeeked on pushing clutch in sometimes, and letting clutch pedal up after the squee, the pedal seemed to be what i would term "sticky" it would sort of hesitate, stick, release slowly, etc.

It did this mostly in the fall getting to colder temps. It kind of went away, fixed itself, I attribute it to moisture?

Maybe yours is very similar. Mine did this after a new clutch install, about 5 or 10k after the install. I have 20k now and the problem has not showed up for quite a while.

good luck

I had a hard time driving the car when I first got it. I have owned several manual transmission cars, drove countless WRX's and never had any trouble till I got this one. Will do some pedal looking this weekend if I get time.
