May 4, 200916 yr requires no special tools at all. here's a great approach: search here for the Endwrench articles (that's subaru's information available online) for your engine. Then search here or ask for specific questions/clarifications. The endwrench articles are typically superb and include pictures. Be a good idea to replace the entire set of timing components, ebay is the way to go for those, that's what just about everyone on here uses.
May 4, 200916 yr requires no special tools at all. Sometimes the crank pulleys will be stubborn, and not want to slide off by hand. Prying from behind WILL break them, so you do need a puller in that case. Any standard steering wheel puller will work perfect. There are 2 small holes on the pulley for the puller bolts. Problem is, most of them, these holes are not threaded yet. In that case you will also need a *M8x1.25 tap. use cutting oil and tap the holes, the tap will fit right in, no drilling required. Then use 2 bolts in the hole, and the steering wheel puller to pull off the crank pulley. It helps to put a smaller bolt in the crank bolt hole so you're puller doesn't booger up the threads. * Any thread pitch M8, or a 3/8ths standard would work, as long as you have the bolts to match.

May 5, 200916 yr Author It is a manual trans...which ebay kits are the best--any after market better than another? also, given I can do with regulat tools (I hope) do most garages actually remove the rad? Thanks all for the replies//this is great... scott
