May 28, 200916 yr I replaced the left front axle in my 84 GL offroad toy.Now it hops when I try to accelerate. Its really bad at lower speeds. At the higher speeds its just more of a bad vibration.I can drive around without pressing the gas and it drives fine,no clicking or binding up,etc but if I want to merge into an intersection..The engine when its doing this sounds like I am flooring it then letting off, repeatedily. Car has 2" suspension lift and 235's.It didnt do the bucking/hopping before Just after I replaced the axle.Axle is a new $60 GCK axle from schucks.
May 28, 200916 yr Author I dont know if it may be related but the carb is running rough(always has) now it likes to stall when stopping) aslo the factory volt gauge is reading 0 volts which isnt really possible...

May 28, 200916 yr Author I suppose I will try the 4 hi thing to do straight from red lights/stop signs. As there any tip for when you need turn from a stop?Just go easy on the gas?
May 28, 200916 yr You have a single new axle installed amongst a forest of old, sloppy parts.... the results are often unpredictable in such cases. You may have a bad DOJ, or it could just be tight. Depending on how the new axle feels it may be that you need to replace the other axle and possibly some mounts as well. GD
May 28, 200916 yr I've run into a few issues with "new" axles myself but mainly on cars I've 5-lugged. My problem was I was getting axles for pretty cheap from a local supplier to my shop. Turns out the DOJs do not have an actual cage and ball setup but more of a roller bearing setup (3 roller bearings compared to 6 ball bearing/cage setup) and was causing nasty vibrations under accel, decel and cornering sometimes as well.
May 28, 200916 yr You should check your lower control arm and tie rod ball joints. I've had a tie rod ball joint pop out on me once. Also recheck your axle torque. Can't hurt. Plus, if your struts are shot, you would likely get alot of wheel hop and loss of traction from a standing start pretty easy. I've had my front tires dribble like a pair of basketballs on bad struts. And plenty of torque steer when accelerating.
May 28, 200916 yr Mine does the same thing and so do all the others, its just the way of the 2" lift. Jeff
September 28, 200916 yr Author I know this is an old thread, but I just got my toy running again and looking out the window I could see the front tires go from 0 camber to full positive camber when ever I touched the gas. Would limiting straps work while its on the street to control the tires?Must just be the soft springs or something but the front end lifts and the tires just go full positive.
