Most major autoparts store will do it for free. Record the code numbers, dont just go by thier analysis of what is wrong.

oh its a long ways from being able to be driven to a shop. no headlights, no fans (maybe that is the cel) no hood, no plates yet. this is the bambi hit car my brother is rebuilding.

You can buy simple code readers for like $40. Anyone doing DIY on cars '96 and newer needs one. They are a basic and necessary tool, just like a wrench.

Or rent a reader for the day. Some places will rent them for free with a deposit = the value of the tool.
