crazy question

Featured Replies

i've got an extra spfi motor laying around and wanted to do something with it so here is the plan. I've already almost finished building a tube frame chasis to hold my spfi motor bolted to a 2wd 5 speed tranny. My main question, what is the spline count on the rear half shafts. Are they the same as the front by any chance. This is my only area of concern. I was thinking of placing the motor in the rear of the chasis and just using rearend half shafts to take out the whole steering problem.

Yup, pretty sure they'll fit. I've got my front axles hooked into a rear diff, so don't see why the rear axles wouldn't hook into a tranny.

thats' great. I'm planning on mounting the whole engine/tranny assembly right above the rear wheels or as close to as possible. THen i would sit right in front of that.

That would seriously work? Holy crap, I'd better get to work designing a chassis. Just think... tube frame slightly larger than a go-cart, 90hp motor, and make it street legal.

I have to go clean myself now...

that's the plan, i don't know how much it will weigh but it will be light. The motor was lifted out by myself. 2wd tranny won't weigh too much. Everything else will be light too. Tube frame will be very light as well. Anyone know the smallest tire that is made for a 13 inch rim?

I made something like that, only difference is i used a built ej25 making 200+hp mated to an EA 5 speed 4x4 trans. It lasted about a summer of insane abuse before it pounded the rod bearings to hell. Now the cart is powered by a WEAK 118hp fuel injected EJ18. It wont pull wheelies in second anymore:D

non turbo front axles (and turbo at axles) and ALL rear axles have a 23 spline

thanks for the help. Mine is going to look something like that. Did you make the front suspension rigid or not?

I'm thinking of somthing along the same lines, but I have NO CLUE how the shifter would be made to work:rolleyes:

The shifter problem has been worked out on mid-engined vw-based sandrails, so maybe that problem isn't too far out of reach.

yeah, i'm a bit puzzled too about the shifter. I know new ford contours use a cable setup in conjuction with the shifter. I was lookin at one today. I was thinking of somehow trying to use the cable setup with maybe paddle shifters on the steering wheel. That would be a hot ticket.

Ya thats what i used, the complete shifter assembly and cables out of a little econ box car. You will also need some creative linkages:D

you have too much time on your hands country boy...

what was done to the EJ25 to squeeze 200 out of it?

Phase I EJ25 block with smaller chamber EJ22 heads, P&P, Phase II ej25 head gaskets. Compression around 12:1 Carter 4bbl jetted for the 2.5l also custom advance in the distributor. No rev limiter. I would say around 200hp, no way to tell for sure but it was fast.

I would have been well over 110mph in the 1/4 and i never had it that fast. You need alot of faith in your own welding and engineering to drive that fast in a high power junkyard heap. Plus the cops frown upon cruising those kinda of vehicles on the roads, not saying they could catch me :D
