89 XT wont start

Featured Replies

purchased a non running 89 XT for 100 bucks.

i pulled off the timing covers to discover a camshaft gear had broken and shredded a timing belt.

I replaced the gear and the belts, and when i try to start it, nothing happens.

all the dash lights turn on so i know there is power.

Where should i start?

make sure you timed the belts right.

one mark up one mark down using the three hash marks on the flywheel.

triple checked it. when i was doing the timing on one of my wagons, it ran on two cylinders when i messed up the marks

and fyi, you cant see the flywheel on mpfi EA82s :)

Uh, sure you can.

Also make sure the rotor is still attached on the disty shaft.

those gears don't just "break off" on a motor with such little power. did the cam shaft turn over by hand? did the engine turn over?

first check your fusible links, one of them is critical to the starting process i forget which one.

make sure the motor turns over, i guess everythign did since you installed the belts.

read the codes off the ECU.

read the codes from memory.

give the starter 12 volts and MAKE it turn over. if it doesn't, bad starter.
