August 31, 200916 yr My fellow Subaru people, I am a Legacy guy, also currently working on my '87 RX turbo coupe(to play in the snow:)).I am considering an SVX addition to my collection since they are really cheap around here.If intending to do a 5-speed swap, whats the best EJ tranny to use inorder to handle the 230 horsepower? With what adjustments?Any extra stuff needed?Someone once suggested that these cars are utterly useless,I hope that this is not a waste of time.Any advise will be much appreciated. Thanks!
August 31, 200916 yr SVX's are WAY cheap to buy, cheapest bang for the buck, can usually get ones with bad trannys for 500-1500 dollars. They were a high priced luxury car, and by all means if you know the problems with the Transmissions, and are buying one to swap a tranny in, then i recommend checking the site http://www.subaru-svx.net/forum/ The car gets 25mpg, cruises at 80mph at about 2100 rpm, and has great handling, is quiet, smooth ride, and lots of bells and wistles that are neat. Many SVX's are very capable of 500k miles with a better tranny, routine wheel bearing replacements, and Tbelt change. .
August 31, 200916 yr Heres the How To from Huck. http://www.subaru-svx.net/photos/user.php?How-To|19529 And saying a SVX is capable of making it to 500K is a bit of a exaggeration, as none have come close to that.....yet. My Claret had 245K when it met its demise.
August 31, 200916 yr Just about any EJ trans will hold up fine as a daily driver. Probably good to avoid one with 250,000 miles on it. If you're going to be pounding it like crazy you might have to think a bit differently.
