September 4, 200916 yr Replaced my headers today however does anyone know what size socket is needed to take the Oxygen sensor out?
September 4, 200916 yr 24mm. you can double check by testing the new one you buy to replace it at the auto parts store.
September 4, 200916 yr Author I hear they have a special removal tool for the sensor? I'm sure advance auto or auto zone has it?
September 4, 200916 yr no special tool is needed, just a wrench has worked on all the EA, ER, and EJ motors i've ever done. it's tight on some, but i've always been able to get them all. you unplug it first, then thread the wire/connector through the wrench to get it on the 6 points of the sensor. the special tool is a socket that can work with the wire on it, has a slot in the side. no need for that though and i find the wrench more maneuverable in tight places/clearances.

September 4, 200916 yr Actually it's 22mm. The removal tool is usually 7/8" but it should work. Sorry, missed the earlier responses. Socket wrench won't work, you need a 22mm box wrench (The connector does fit through, right?) or open end wrench. Edited September 4, 200916 yr by Olnick Late!
September 4, 200916 yr Little tip. Change the sensor with the exhaust system hot. Wear gloves. Hot metal expands, the hole that the sensor screws into will expand more than the threads of the sensor and it makes it easier to remove.

I learned the hard way that the cat stays hotter longer then the rest
September 4, 200916 yr I used a closed end wrench on mine. I knew the O2 sensor was bad, and that I was def going to replace it....so I just clipped the wires and slide the closed end of the wrench over the wires.
September 4, 200916 yr I always use a 7/8 box end wrench. Since the old one is always rusty - and I wouldn't want to end up using a pipe wrench. It's easier to keep it "true" when hitting it with the hammer which is often needed. I also usually use Liquid Wrench instead of PB Blaster to soak the sensor down preferable when warm a time or two before attempting removal. Liek hours before. Tehn hit it with PB immediately before removal. I also ALWYAS anti-seize the new one with the highest temp anti-seize that I can find.
November 23, 201015 yr Author Anyone have the pinout for the oxygen sensor? I think the sensor is ready to say times up! I wanna put my scope to the sensor.
