Just traded my '00 OB for an "03 OB, H6, 3.0L

Now I know why i got such a good deal

 

Drove 1.5 hrs. home from dealer yesterday, ran and sounded great. Got up early this morning, no sound to any speakers except the little tweeters inside the mirrors. That sound was mild but relatively clear.

 

I thought, troubleshot, failed, troubleshot, failed more, tried an aftermarket H.U. Same thing. I'm stumped.

 

The tweeters seem to be downstream (but on the same circuit) as the big front speakers) The wire color changes from where it leaves head unit, to where it meets the speakers. Why? Where? I've read a lot about legacys having an amp under pass. seat. I think my '00 did. I don't see one in this model. It has heated seats, does that make a difference? Anyways, I have no sound to any of the main speakers in the car, and your help will be extremely appreciated.

Sounds like an amp problem to me. Thinking all the LL Bean models came with an amp. If the radio is a McIntosh, then there is for sure an amp somewhere.

That's a tricky part. It's not an L.L. Bean. In late 2003 model year, they released some cars with 6 cyl. that were otherwise "normal" The only extra stuff mine has is the cold weather package. So, if there is an amp, I don't see it.

Checked the specs on Subaru 101 and it looks like if you got the cold weather package the amp was not an option. Could have one or the other but not both.

That's what I was starting to think. But what could cause this type of behavior if it's not the head unit? I put a test light on the terminals that connect to the big FL speaker. didn't light at low and middle volume levels. but just flickered a tiny bit at full volume. When plugged into speaker, nothing...

frustrated.

Most of the time, the tweeters are just paralleled off the mains. Look for a bad connection in the doors

you could always take it to cartoys or some stereo installation place and have them rewire all the speakers.. it would not cost much.. you could also take the HU out and go buy one of the cheep stereos cartoys has and have THEM deal with the problem its what i did on my mazda with zero speaker wire.

Don't know how many amps a radio needs to play but had a thought maybe the problem is upstream from the radio. Poor ground? Broken power wire? Just too much resistance somewhere?

The info I have shows that the tweeter for the front speakers is tied in parallel with the front main speakers for either the premium or standard systems. It doesn't seem possible that the main front and rear speakers would all go out at once. I can only think that the original system has been modified and a seperate amp has been installed that seperates the mains and tweeters.

you seem to have a + wire that is shorted out to ground somewhere.....which will take out the amp for all speakers.

+1 Yes, an aftermarket amp would also explain the color change in the speaker wires. Some amps are fused. If you got lucky, maybe you just blew a fuse. BTW, buy or borrow a digital volt meter, it will make troubleshooting much easier.

Now, you all will call bullsh.. but all speakers were blown. replaced four speakers and sounds great. used the 9V battery "pop" test to troubleshoot. bizarr. either I drove home from the dealer on less than 4 and finally blew what was left, or I blew 'm all at once. anyways. I got tunes. Workin' Man's dead baby!
