one piece driveshaft ? ea82

Featured Replies

Hi,

I want to ask if anyone has put in a 1 piece driveshaft in place of the 2 piece in ea 82 cars? Is there an alignment angle problem or other reason to use 2 pieces? any 1 piece success stories or disasters??

Thanks

Two-peice gives smoother operation and better ground/exhaust clearance. You can use a single peice if you want. Nothing wrong with it. EA81's had single peice drive shafts and were only 5" shorter or so.

i am running a one piece driveshaft on my 88 GL-10. but i am running a 6sp trany. the angle is close, with the EA trans it would be better.

i dont know if i would do it again. i would probably just go with a newer 2 piece shaft, i dont know if the one piece has any advantages.

fewer ujoints, less weight, no carrier bearing = more hp to the wheels! (how much would you guess dave - about 0.04 hp?)

i kind of like the idea of fewer ujoints and no carrier bearing but yeah probably pointless functionally speaking.

My car used to be FWD, so there was no carrier bearing mount. I fabricated one, but the bearing/ujoints failed after about 30k miles.

So I grabbed one off an EA81 wagon, had it lengthened 9" (IIRC), and have been using it ever since. it does rub on the mounting bolts for my ebrake handle and such (stick out further than stock....) when really hammering on it, but I think if my rear diff bushing wasn't shot, that wouldn't be a problem.

Hi,

Thanks for the input, i sort of thought it would be ok but wanted to ask. my center carrier has a lot of movement, the bearing is smooth, just the rubber part. so i thought of a 1 piece for the simplicity, and less parts too. if i can find a carrier brng assembly that fits, I think the carrier is not available for our subarus as a separate part, does someone know a number to buy that fits, maybe a datsun or something else??

Thanks
