90-93 Legacy MT 5sp, 3.90 Rear Diff?

Featured Replies

I had a 5sp manual trans from a 90-93, I think 92 sitting around. I installed it in a 95 Legacy (auto manual swap) and I need to get the right rear diff. I'm pretty sure they were all 3.9 can someone confirm. Thanks

I'm not sure about the rear diff in a automatic, but the early legacies were 4.111. Try checking the TY number (on the bell housing near the starter) against the chart in the USRM to see which rear it takes. If the chart doesn't list it, run a google search on the entire TY number.

learn it, live it, love it

90-91 non turbo AT & MT: 4.111

91-94 turbo AT & MT: 3.90

92-94 non turbo ATs: 3.90

92-94 non turbo MTs: 4.111

but like ed said, it's always good to double check these things.

Thanks, I'll double check the TY # on the trans.

If it came from a '92 and is setup for a cable clutch (non turbo) then it's a 4.111 ratio tranny. Only the turbo's had 5MT's with 3.9 in those years and they were pretty obvious animals being setup with hydraulic clutch's.

92-94 non turbo ATs: 3.90

is this right?? this is opposite of 95-99 legacy 2.2L.

The TY sticker was there but no numbers on it. I guess I'll just get the drive line hooked up and mark the tires and with one side jacked front and back see if they rotate together. It would be nice if it's a match.

Dealer said the rear end was a 4.11 on the 95 by the VIN

95 auto trans was 4.11, i thought 95 5spd was 3.9.

So it seems the Original Poster in this thread is lucky. His new 5spd should be 4.11 and his 95 auto rear end is also 4.11 so he should be good to go.

Front is rotating further than the rear, 10 revs on the front produce about 9 & 13/16 revs on the back.

Front 4.11

Rear 3.9

Time for a 4.11 rear. I guess the dealer was wrong.

Killed a tranny in my 90 Legacy, ended up selling it. Digging around on my 91, I noticed the rear diff was labeled "4.11" and I remembered my 90 was labeled "3.90" Both were N/A and manuals. Well no WONDER it shredded the trans!
