Sudden heavy fuel consumption 97 Legacy Brighton 2.2

Recommended Posts

Greetings all!      My 97 Legacy Brighton 2'2 wagon has 97,000 M. (arizona car) is mint!

After an oil change at a local shop I went through 1/2 a tank of gas and got 60 miles, revs stayed high after easing off, felt sluggish on pick up.

OBD Scanner showed no codes, but in a file circled fuel management sensor!

I checked all the vacuum lines, one was a bit loose, had a mechanic check for leaks. He said fuel sensor is good.(?)

He  suggested it was the fuel pump……...

Would  a faulty fuel pump  push  less gas not more?

Can't tell if all that gas is flowing into the sump or burning up?

It's vanishing somewhere!

Car starts,  runs ok, but down on power still, not smoking,  whines a bit, but the gas is getting sucked into the engine at a rapid rate!

Grateful for any thoughts on what else I should check?

Many thanks!     Pethog in Toronto.                                                              86, 90, 92 Loyale, 96 Legacy

First thing that comes to mind is a fuel pressure regulator. It has a small diaphragm that can puncture and leak fuel into the vacuum line connected to it, which can cause it to run very rich. Disconnect that vacuum line and look for fuel in it.

I don't see how a fuel pump could do it. It seems to me like a knock, MAF or O2 sensor would fail more slowly.
