I had an ad pop up on Facebook today for a '91 Legacy wagon that won't stay running (the owner says they were told it's the coil- will start and run for a minute then quit), 175K miles, body looks fairly solid except for normal quarter panel rust.Owner claims car drives OK otherwise. They are asking $300 and will haul off to the junkyard in a day or two if no one takes it (which would be a shame in any case, IMO).

 

I'm wondering if its worth the 50 mile drive to look at it. The owner says they can tow if (not sure ho far they are willing to go). Do the '91's need to be towed on a flatbed like newer Subies?

 

Also, if the car ended up being a real beater, would it be worth the $300 for the EJ22, and would a '91 EJ22 swap easily into a late 90's Outback? (If I can locate a cheap one with a bad EJ25).

If its an automatic awd then trailer only, if its a stick shift put it in neutral and tow away .Lots of things from a plugged intake tube ,or a failing maf can cause those symptoms. IMO A running ej-22 is worth $300 but after driving there I would pull out and offer $250 and see if cash talks .

91, with 2.2 engine will not easily transplant into a late 90's Subaru. The electronic control systems are different. One is OBD1, the later models starting in 95 are OBD2.

 

Yes prolly worth $300. Junk yard would pay about $200 for the car. If it starts and runs for a minute, then quits, I am thinking it won't take much effort, or money to get it running properly.

 

Prolly best to trailer it home. I think many of the 91's were AWD. I had a 91, and it was AWD. The 2.2 motor in a 91 is darn near bullet proof, They don't break down much at all. Easily can make 300K in miles.

$300 is probably worth it - any maintenance history? Ever Overheated?

 

Use a '95-'98 IM from another EJ22 and this here Non-EGR mod  (if it has EGR) and you can drop it into any '95-'98 Legacy, any '96-'99 GT or OB, '98 Forester or '95-'98 Impreza w/the 2.2 or 2.5 (RS).

 

IF AWD, Grab a 12mm open-end wrench for the 4 bolts on the rear pinion flange, a screwdriver to wedge in to hold it in place and disconnect the tail-end of driveshaft. Then you/they can tow it on a dolly w/the front wheels up.
