[er...um...at least an hour:rolleyes: ] I have tons of questions. Have done some searches for a few already and have gotten some ideas. This is a great resource for me. BTW The wife and I own a production date of 1-7-85 GL Hatchback 4x4. Parts are all 84. We bought it brand new. We love this little car. It has 272,000 miles. I pulled the engine stripped it and a friend rebuilt it at 220,000 miles. IT looks resonably good but is showing its age. gonehuntn Posted January 4, 2004 Author Share Posted January 4, 2004 I have been doing searches on this site most of the day. [we are snowed in] I found a lot to think about. To start with my little hatchback is pretty much stock ... until recently any way. I would like to keep it just a good little street runner. I just put a weber on it and did away with most of the vacumn line BS. I am still trying to work out the quirks with that. I am not exactly sure how to plumb the PCV system. So far I have just hooked both lines out of the valve covers to a T, then to the PCV valve. Some how the hole in the bottom of the new air filter housing should get plumbed in. After sitting for a couple of days the webber seems to have lost the fuel out of the bowl. It needs a little squirt of starting fluid to get going [yes I know how hard starting fluid is on an engine] I have not figured out what to do with the fuel tank vapor lines. I have just plugged them off. I still am running the originol fuel filter. I would like to go to a see thru filter. I would love to find a way to quiet down the hydraulic valves. There were a lot of ideas in my search. I need to do something with the old exhaust system. The old catastrophic converter seems to burn up the CV joint above it. I would love to do away with it and run a better system. [no I do not have to pass emissions:D] Seems like there are a lot of options I never considerd. I think the question of the day is where do you get a quality rebuilt half shaft? One thing I did to it that I am really pleased with is the Impreza seats I installed. GeneralDisorder Posted January 4, 2004 Share Posted January 4, 2004 As for the lifters - try some of the additives, and thicker oil - if that doesn't work a new oil pump usually solves it - sometimes just a reseal will work too... http://www.cvaxles.com has been reccomended by a lot of board members - quality rebuilds, and they aren't terribly expensive... ($55 I believe) Fuel tank vapor line - just leave it open to the air... the tank has to vent afterall.... Use the fitting off the hitachi on the weber for the return line... A clear filter - yes - I am running one too. Just plug off that vapor seperator line - not needed. You can remove the whole evaporative emmisions system if you like - canisters and hard lines - all of it. The valve cover breathers should be run into that little nipple on the weber's air filter... Do a search for it If you gutted the Cat out, and left it in there, it should drop the temp of the exhaust around that boot.. seems like it should anyways And for the fuel filter, we use Racor filters on our commercial fishing boats and they are awesome.. You just unscrew a t-handle on the top of filter setup and then the filter has a lil handle on it to pull it out. (filter change without getting gas on your hands). They also have a petcock at the bottom of the filter to drain out water/dirt etc... I have been thinking of installing a radiator overflow system in place of the fuel vapor canistor. I really need to spend more time reserching the exhaust mods to come up with what I want. The lifetime warrantee is nice - but having to USE it five times as often is annoying to say the least. http://www.cvaxles.com has a good reputation on this board for making a high quality product that will lilkely last as long as the originals did.... gonehuntn Posted January 4, 2004 Author Share Posted January 4, 2004 I have had very bad luck with rebiult CV's. The originol CV's went over 200,000 miles. Since then I have installed 4 rebuilt, lifetime warranty CV's on the right side, 2 on the left side. I got the last ones from NAPPA and it has been almost a year since I have had to replace one.
