I replaced the water pump and timing set (mitsumo ebay) when I put a 95ej22 into my 99 outback about 40'000 miles ago. Recently smelled coolant and noticed what appeared to be a leak from the WP seal. I pulled the WP and replaced the seal that showed no signs of leaking (new Subaru seal). I damaged the bypass hose, so that was replaced as well as a new Stant thermostat and Subaru thermostat gasket.. After driving it for a week or two I am still noticing a drip or two of coolant in the same area (right at one of the machined fins on the WP near the thermostat housing. I cleaned the area and watched it. I swear that it appears to be seaping out of the casting, it is dry above and below the area where the drop forms. Has anyone else seen anything like this? Thanks Anthony

Curls, What these guys are telling you is spot on correct. I swapped in a 95 EJ22 in place of a blown 99 EJ25D. It was complete plu and play. The three main engine disconnects from the EJ22 manifold plugged right into my 99 Outback. The computer doesn't know the differance. I got an 85,000 mile engine for $450.

I don't know about MI, but in SC we are required to carry uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage with auto insurance even on Liability insurance. Uninsured motorist coverage will cover a hit and run. It is called a "phantom" driver. Do a little research, you might be in better shape than you thought.... Good luck with the swap!

A young boy once asked a wise old man what the most important advice in life was. The wise old man responded to always try to make good choices in life. The young boy asked the wise old man how he would know to make good life choices. The wise old man replied " by making poor life choices". Don't be afraid to let him work on the car. Go slow, use google to research what you want to do, and ask lots of questions here. Good luck!

I think they are all pretty bomb proof with the exception of the head gaskets of the ej25d and possible torque bind issues if the tires were mismatched. If the price was right I would jump on it. Even if you didn't use the 92 engine, sourcing a 95 from an automatic isn't that hard. (The 95 ej22 from an auto car is a direct drop in. It has the EGR and duel port heads). So far as the interferance, the ej22 is a non interferance engine up till 96. 97 went to an interferance. My grandad had a mechanic tell him that about an old escort he has that poped a timing belt. Mechanic told him that because the belt broke the heads were toast, but that he could replace the engine for him for $1400. 2 hours and $90 later, I had his trusty 93 escort going again for him. Morale of the story, Google is your friend. It took 5 minutes to determine that the Escort was a non interferance engine. F-ing mechanic trying to take advantage of a 90 year old man.

Some guys with more experience will prob. Chime in. This swap has been discussed many, many, many times. The short answer is yes. The 92 does not have an EGR. The 99 does. You will have a check engine light. Some people have defeated the light by just having the EGR solenoid plugged in, but not attached to the engine. Search a little for more details. BTW, the 92 is a non interference engine. Why was it replaced when the timing belt broke? There should have been no damage from that. Good luck with the swap! I have a 99 Outback with a swapped EJ22 and love it!

What's wrong? Toyota question
wavekayaker replied to PinkPoodle's topic in Non Soob Cars and Bikes Discussion
92 should have a 4afe engine. This engine has a cold start injector that gives the engine a shot of fuel for starting. So far as I know this isn't a common problem, but it is the first place I would look. The 4afe is a pretty comon engine and fairly easy to come by. Good luck -
Now that I've got some miles on this swap I thought I would post an update. It's been 20,000 miles since I switched to the EJ22. My thoughts. Sometimes I miss the power of the EJ25D. With the AC on and needing to go, I wish there was a little more there. The HLA's let me know when it's time to change the oil. Around 4000 or so miles I start hearing them tap a bit. Change the oil and they are quiet again. The engine continues to run flawless, very smooth. The MPG's didn't change. Get's the exact same mileage. ~ 23 to 25 If I had a car with a EJ25D with a known history that just needed head gaskets I would fix them, otherwise, I wouldn't hesitate to swap in the EJ22. Anthony

Thanks for you answers the other day Dave. I ended up tapping the starter hole into the tranny with a 12mm X 1.5 (what I had) then bought the wrong size bolt by mistake. I have one bolt holding the starter on until I get back by the store and it is working fine. I love the idea of non-interferance and regular valve tappets!

I've always thought everyone was a bit harsh on the EJ25D engine. I loved the power output and response on mine. I bought the car with 86,000 miles and it appeared to have the origional head gaskets with no signs of leaking. During an engine re-seal, due to some broken exhaust studs, the engine got new head gaskets, a valve job, new timing belt and components, and a re-seal at around 127,000 miles. Afterwards, long story short, I was losing oil. It wasn't burning, or dripping. Figured out it was in the coolant, but no coolant in the oil. Leakdown test showed problems with the right head. It came back off, was checked at a machine shop, block was re-checked, cleaned and a new gasket went back on with the head. It cranked, came up to temp and sounded great, for 30 miles. Then something sounded like it wanted to escape the crankcase. I think a bearing went. Never ran hot. I will do a tear down later to necropsy it. I was done with the EJ25D. I found a couple of 95 EJ22's around me and made a deal at a salvage yard for one, paid over the phone and went to pick it up a few days later. They pulled the wrong engne, got mad at me, refunded my money, and were general asses! Found another engine, drove 160 miles each way in a Suburban ($100 in gas) and picked up a very nice looking 95 EJ22 with EGR (Thanks Import Salvage in Marion, NC!). The engine has ~96,000 miles, clean oil, new looking NAPA oil filter, very clean looking coolant, and is just shiny! Friday night I pulled the EJ25, Saturday I switched over the new baffle plate, tensioners, and clutch, hung the new timing belt, re-sealed the engine, figured out the vacuume lines, and bolted up the EJ22. Sunday morning I finished connecting everything. After priming the oil pump, it fired off on the first try. I ran it up to temperature, took a run around the block, then left for Easter dinner on a 90 mile round trip. I got one check engine code for IAC idle, and after loosening the throttle cable all was good! I have been comuting in the car all week. I can barely tell the differance between the two engines. A quick start up-hill with the AC on might be a little slower, but otherwise I would never know. The interstate in no problem. 60,70,80, it likes to run! I am still shifting aroung 2500 to 3000 RPM's and dont feel the need to rev any higher on normal acceleration. The engine is very smooth and even quiet. I appear to be getting a bit better mileage ~27, 28 MPG, and will know more when I get gas tomorrow. So the short of that is EJ22, Very Happy! Anthony

John, If I could go that route I would without hesitation. There was no resoning with these guys and they (3 sons) run the yard. There is no going around them. There are a few more EJ22's showing up on car-part.com. None with that kind of mileage though. The kicker is that the mileage I was quoted was from a auto car. Who knows what was on the one they pulled. I don't trust them. I have a few more cars to drive and am not desperate, so no wories. I have next friday off and hope to find another engine. Anthony

Afterbang, is the head drilled for the EGR on the manual ? I have the EGR on the 99 2.5, but everything I've read said it has to be from an automatic car for a straight swap w/ no check engine light. This yard had the right engine, they just refused to pull it after pulling the wrong one. Thanks Thanks

My ej25D in my 99 Leggy Outack took a dive a few weeks ago. I'm done messing with it and started looking for a good ej22 to drop in. A parts yard about an hour from me showed that they one. I called and specified that it had to be an AUTOMATIC car. They had a 95 with 84,000 miles for $450 w/ no core. I gave her my CC. I had 1/2 a day off work today and drove out to get the engine after calling to make sure it wold be ready and again verifing a 95 EJ22 from an automatic Legacy. (re-curring theme) I got to the yard and was told to back up to the gate. After waiting 10 minutes one of the ladies came out and told me that they hadn't pulled the engine yet, appalogized, and said they were starting then. No biggie. I told her "no problem" and waited paitently. After an hour they came out with a very nice looking engine w/ a clutch and PP and no EGR. Then the owners sons that run the place go involved. They told me that there was no differance because their computer showed none. Then they got pissed told the cashier to refund my money and spent the next few minutes flying off the handle and insulting me while they had a room full of customers waiting. It was the wierdest thing I've ever seen! The cashiers were appalogizing to me, the guys that pulled the parts were appalogizing to me. I got my refund and left. SO, never go to Case Used Parts in Marion, SC. they are idiots! And if anyone has a nice EJ22 lying around, let me know! Thanks for reading my rant! Anthony
