  1. 161k... I think I need someone who knows the engine to help me get it running good... but it has this HORRIBLE knock, and I've run mmo and stuff through it twice and changed the oil twice since I got it bout a week ago, and its got all new gas, cleaned out the carb and did the timing(which fixed one of my problems, it was dieseling really bad when i shut it off), but it still has this HORRIBLE knocking or clacking sound sometimes, I put in 20-50 instead of 10-40 the second time and it didnt get any better or worse really. freind says its got a rod on its way out but I dunno doesnt seem likely but it sounds kinda bad. also its 250 for the engine, transmission, bunch of spare parts, and the shop manual. not just 250 for the engine. I do know i need some kinda transmission work, I still havent gotten a good look at that so far but it slips out of first whenever its under any kind of load, all the other gears are good but if I put it in first when I go down a hill it will pop out unless I hold it. also does it on HARD acceleration, but usually the wheels start spinning before it pops out of gear
  2. meh... milage may vary... this is only a band aid, your odometer will still be way off. as far as I know you can get differant spedo gearing, or I'd start yankin parts from other vehicles till I got something accurate... but I swear theres probably a way to calibrate everything right, someone just needs to get really into the electronics and figure it out... but then again I might also be full of ************ and not know what the hell I am talking bout edit: you can buy aftermarket speedometers that come with an electrical sending unit and some of them are totally customizeable...
  3. i have no idea... have you pulled out the old one to compare? or is that the problem, there is no old one?
  4. nice work... cant wait to see how it turns out. keep us posted, I have a 720 4x4 that has 320k miles, its running like a champ but if it ever decides to kick the bucket I already got 3 plans in my head for what I'm gonna do with it... SUBASAN! oh yeah, how where you planning on making that plate? I need to take a closer look.. but for that it seems like it would have to be DEAD ON when it comes to accuracy and precision. not something someone could hammer out with a torch grinder and drill press?
  5. I think I creamed my pants when I read 4.44 final drive ratio .. thats better than my jeep... if you need any help at all what so ever... OMFG I WANNA HELP... too bad you're so far away. please keep us all posted as you gather information, and your plans/hopes for this project. my uncle has a used transmission shop, I'm wondering what all would go into something like this, cause over the winter break, if i get motivated and have a fairly good idea of what i'm looking for, I might just go through all my uncles crap and mix and match and see what works... he has a LOT of parts just sitting around...
  6. yeah, I'll ditch the spare idea, if its not safe I'm not gonna do it, i've already learned my lesson doing that stuff on my last car, ends up being more expensive in the end. trying the best way to make everything work RIGHT for less than $1200... need brake work, 4" lift, some good tough mud tires + rims, and probably some other stuff I dont know about, and hopefully have a little bit of lunch money left over.
  7. hmm... I dont know, I know the spare tire isnt all that much to talk about, but the rim seems just as beefy as the stock wheels...
  8. hey I'm just curious, I was changing out the axle shafts on my soob this morning, and I noticed that spare tire rim is 15"... I think its 5" wide.. has anyone tried swampers on these to see how well they work? I was gonna redrill my hubs and get some toyota rims but if the spare tire rim works, it would be a lot cheaper just to find 3 or 4 more spare rims. also is it possible for these rims to work w/ the back side out if rubbing in the wheel well is a huge problem? I havent seen too much about this, and I figure if it worked good that it'd be pretty common/popular on the board, tho I havent seen anything against it either... but I've been thinking quite alot about my bigger tire options and it almost seems like it could be too good to be true.
  9. I wish I could have said the same about my jeep... but its going bye bye and I now have myself a beater subaru
  10. yeah but it be worth the expense of the trip of going all the way to alaska? or even washington? great find... I'm jealous, best I could do was buy a beater 81 for 375, but hey it runs and is sexy and I've already fallen in love with it the few days I've actually been able to work on it.
  11. yeah... now that it drives, I gotta figure out what that clacking sound is, it sounds like its bout to throw a rod out through the block on the drivers side... I hope its not that, doesnt seem like ea81s are known for throwing rods, especially with as little as 160,000 miles on the engine from what i've read... anyways, thanks for all your help.
  12. he said he's got all new exhaust, everything brand new... so probably not clogged cat
  13. yeah it only took a few minutes to get the old axle off... i've never done brakes before, so I dont know how to take the calipers off, can you guys tell me about this? anyways apparently the splines were going in past the wheel bearing, but the part of the shaft that is wider where the wheelbearing sits, wasnt going in. I got 2 new shafts from napa today, and they were reman'd by differant companies.. they said one was left over stock from a company that went under about a month ago, and the new one was their new supplier... I was having trouble with the "old" new one, so I compared to the other, and aside from the threads and castle nut being differant, the new ones edge where the bearing sits was beveled a little bit, and may actually be slightly smaller, as to where I could get it through the wheel bearing... so I'm gonna see how it works out... i'm gonna see if i can get this one to work on the otherside, if it comes down to it, should I just wait and exchange this shaft for a differant one tomorrow, or should I file down the edge and put a small bevel on it? I'd be lost without you guys, thank you so much
  14. ARGH... it wont work... any other suggestions that arent gonna have the neighbors call the police? edit... I cant even get the splines started,
  15. I was actually thinking about that earlier today... I've seen some people do something similar to a jeep cherokee, cut out the top around the back cargo area, take out the carpet and put in some pickup bedliner and a tailgate and build a custom internal frame and then make a soft top... I'd practice on one from the junkyard first before doing it to anything remotely nice though... if you do it be sure to post how it turns out
  16. ok... I ran into some trouble.. i got the shafts out really easy, I ended up using my gear puller to push the shaft out of the hub assembly after I got it started with my hammer. I got the new shafts, they slid right onto the transmission just fine, but I cant get it to go back into the hub/rotor assembly and I"ve been playing with it for bout an hour and I'm starting to get to the point to where I'm so cold and frustrated I'm gonna hurt myself if I dont take a brake and try to think this out a little bit.. there has to be an easy way to get this back together.. could I have ************ed something else up with the gear puller? the disc rotor is kind of loose now and i'm thinking maybe its not suppose to be? CRAP i'm frustrated. how hard is it to put a shaft in the hole, i've always been able to do it in the past
  17. mm yeah.. I need to clean the engine up a bunch w/ some mmo and some seafoam or something before I make any decisions but I'm just wondering if thats reasonable... as for manuals I'm not sure where to get them tho i never thought about powell so I'll call them tomorrow thanks
  18. yeah... I live in the hollywood district and after having drove all the way out to the napa on columbia to get the shaft, I didnt really feel like driving my moms truck back out gi joes after i got home... tho I feel stupid now cause theres a gi joes right out near that napa anyways, once I got started it took only about 10-15 minutes to get the shaft out thanks to you guys... this board rocks... now for the passanger side.
  19. ok thanks... I'm getting started on it now(a little bit late :-( ), hopefully I should know what works and what doesnt in an hour or so... meh I wish harbor frieght carried 36mm 1/2" drive sockets... I had to fork over $18 for one at the only parts store nearby that had one
  20. also it'd be nice if someone would be willing to come take a look at my rig and help me diagnose anything that might be wrong with the engine, for free since I'm essentially broke... i have yet to run any mmo or seafoam through it, so it might just need a bunch of that and a bunch of carb cleaner and new gas... but I figure I'll need another engine someday or parts for it and I could really use the shop manual..
