  1. wow that looks like its in mint condition... for an 82 subaru I'm jealous...
  2. ok so I came across an ea81 engine, in decent condition but could benefit from a rebuild, also comes with transmission... I'm assuming its a 4speed d/r one cause it came out of an '80 wagon, but i'm not sure. also coming with it is a shop manual for 1980 and a box of various spare parts, nuts/bolts and hoses and a cv boot. he wants $250 for them, for an engine tranny and shop manual it seems reasonable but I'm not sure cause I bought my 81 wagon for $375 and virtually nothing is wrong with it other than it needs a tune up cause it sat for 5 years. help please... need to know what i should offer him for it. also I dont need a transmission(as far as I know) so if anyone would be interested in that please let me know so I can plan my budget. this is around portland, oregon... thanks trevor
  3. hey, if I want to convert to a toyota lug pattern on my hubs, is it possible to get new hubs that are already made with that bolt pattern rather than having to drill the stock one out? 1 hub in the rear of my 81 needs to be replaced, I'm not sure why but its extremely rusted, where as the other 3 hubs on the car are in perfect shape... I think maybe caused by leaky wheel break cylinder?
  4. well I'm hoping it goes okay... it was a 93 cherokee, it was tough and it kept ALOT to keep it from running all together, but everything else on the car other than the engine and drivetrain was a POS. man I'm gonna have nightmares now...
  5. yeah listen to these guys... but best thing to do first is see what comes out
  6. oh god... sounds as bad as what i went through with my jeep, except I did all the fawkin work myself... I just sold it and bought my subaru... I hope that wasnt a mistake...
  7. I meant rear bearing on the mainshaft of your transmission, usually when your rear bearing goes out you'll have a hard time shifting into 2nd, if it even goes into gear at all; when your front bearing goes out, it will be difficult or impossible to shift into 4th. that might not be 100% accurate but thats along the lines of what'll happen when a bearing gets toasted. drain the gear oil out of your transmission and see what comes out with it... good chance that if you toasted a bearing, it means a seal is also bad, a bad seal can cause bearings to fry and bad bearings can kill seals, so theres a GOOD chance theres not very much oil in your transmission and most of what comes out is all the sludge full of bits of metal and metal shavings that sits at the bottom. if you rebuild your transmission rather than replace it, make SURE all the parts are clean and free of dust and shavings when they go back together or it wont last edit: bearings tend to make ALOT of noise when they go
  8. sounds to me like your rear bearing got toasted, drain the oil and see what comes out.. but I might not know what i'm talking about, the only transmission I've taken apart is the one on my 720 nissan 4x4...
  9. not meaning to hijack this thread or anything, but I'm wondering about something along similar lines for an ea81... I plan on giving it minium of 4" lift and probably something around 28" depending on what i can find that fits my budget. I'm not quite sure as to what the major differances are between the ea81 and ea82 yet.
  10. ok thanks... I'll probably have more questions once I get started, hopefully not to many.. I dont know if I should be asking this yet since i'm new, but it seems the axle shafts are pretty common to go out, I'm kinda surprised its so hard to find a write up on the site, I figure it should be in the online repair manual or something.
  11. ok thanks thats awesome, will help me a LOT... I have a couple more questions: I read something about axle shafts from advance auto parts(I think?) or something where they slip on and off a lot easier... it something that toyotas use I think, anyone have any information about these? and what are the best axle shafts to use and where I can get them? I figure I will have this car long enough to do this several times. for the castle nut on the hub, whats the easiest way to remove it without air tools? they are on there pretty good... on my jeep I would just make creative use of a breaker bar, some pipe and my 4 ton floor jack but that might not be the best idea. Does anything need to be torqued or just tightend untill it dun move no more? thanks again
  12. so, there seem to be a lot of threads on this forum that refer to some portion of replacing axle shafts, but not enough to get me started. I need to do one front and one rear on my '81 subaru wagon... i have NOT been able to find any write up or article that so many threads refer to and I've never done this before, my last and only other vehicle was a jeep w/ live axles. I dont exactly want to spend all weekend just figuring out how to take something apart and have to wait the next weekend to get it put back together and/or could anyone give me a line on where to pick up a FSM for this? thanks a bunch
  13. hey all... I just bought an 81 subaru wagon, gonna trailer it over here this coming weekend. I've had a 93 jeep cherokee that i lifted n all that stuff, but I've decided its time I move on to something better where I can afford to drive to work and school everyday , where I dont see clones of my own rig every 3rd cherokee i see on the street, etc.. etc.. anyways I plan on modifying it quite a bit once my jeep sells, but first I need to get it driveable. currently it has 2 bad cv joints and since it seems this is a common problem I was wondering if theres a write up describing the best/easiest/fastest way to swap it out as I've never worked on anything with an indepandent suspension before. ok for the fun stuff... after reading around a little bit, I've decided 4 or 5" is a good amount of lift for this car. I have access to a shop and if I can fab something up, it would be prefered over buying a kit as I will be on a bit of a budget. can anyone help get me started in the right direction as to what components I will need to get/make, and also what I may need to do to other parts of the car that might be affected by the suspension lift, like driveline length/angles etc... and also what size tire can the axles/differantials handle. thanks, [edit] how'd my post end up here.. o well...
