  1. The cat is worth checking, unbolt the exhaust and take it for a spin, see if that helps. Other posibilities could be the fuel system, check to see if you have enough presure, especialy if it was originaly a carbureted car, or a pluged filter. I would love to come up and give you a hand with it but I am way behind on getting my jeep back together, I got my engine back in but I still need to put the intake, exhaust, alternator, and radiator back on and the front body work and drill holes for and install the transmition crossmember.
  2. Well, I have to go with the Eagle. I have driven several subarus, blown about 6 sub motors in less then 4 years. I have also driven several jeeps with the 258 6 including the cj5 I have now, I beat the piss out of it regularly and have never had any serious motor problems and it has plenty of power to go fast.
  3. I have no idea on the phantom thing, never herd of one of them before. My current dirrection of thought on a locker though is to swap out the rear center section for somthing else that is commonly available, cheap, and has lockers available for it. So far I am looking into a ford 8.8" front center section from an exploder, or the rear center from an independant rear toyota celica they to fit the above criteria fairly well. I need to look more into the stub shaft issue though, the fords come stock with a stub shaft with a u-joint yolk. Would also need to fab up a mounting plate, that should be no big deal. The only other problem I see so far would be the overall width, from the ends of the stubs being too wide. might need to look into adding a little width to the rear track to be able to use stock subaru axles. Might look into using a diferent cv axel too...
  4. I'll be there. Well, here anyway, I live right outside walker!
  5. I think I am most in favour of modifing an ausie or lockright to work in a subaru or nissan carrier. While I have never had either one apart and in my hands it seems like it should be doable. And on that note..do subaru front diffs use the same type of setup as the back as far as spiders in a carrier?
  6. I say weld it too. If you do it right it is totaly reversable, all you would need to do is replace your spider gears. And if you plan to go with a lsd later any way, it wont be in there forever. It will however be a great asset at walker. As for easy trails at walker it has been about a year since I have been through there but I dont think there are any easier trails. On the body damage thing, The worst you should get would be some scrapes to your rocker panels from them sliding over a rock.
  7. well, thats actualy encouraging Rooinater, I am not sure I want to start a revoloution like that though, mabey, I will look into though. So, since it seems unlikley to get a real locker in a subaru diff anytime soon...... How about the best alternative for a limited slip. That would be a gleason - torsen type. I have seen them in action in scouts before. They are as good as a locker untill one wheel is off the ground then they open back up but a bit of break presure can lock it back up again. From the reasearch I have done they can be found for a subaru R-160 housing and also nissan R-180 housings. Unfortunatly though due to the design of them they do tend to cost alot.
  8. Thanks Numbchux, I really am a goor driver with both open diffs and lockers. In situations where you have a tire off the ground you are way right, a lsd isnt any help. And with the limited suspension travel subarus have it is fairly comon to have at least one tire off the ground.Thats why I would like a locker.
  9. Well, I am no stranger to welded diffs, I have a welded front in my jeep and love the simplicity and awesome traction of it but I'm not too excited about removing axles to drive on road. mabey if who'zims? nissan front hub thingey works out ok I will go that route. Also, is the problem with a welded rear on road just tire wear or are you likely to break things?
  10. So, I am reading around about traction options for subaru differentials and stuff while I plott my own subaru build up, My question is has anyone looked into making something like a lockright locker or other comon automatic locker fit into and work in a subaru diff case? I have never opened up a subaru diff to see what kind of room they have inside for "stuff" I should think though if you could get one to mount up inside the housing you could get someplace like currie to make some un-breakeable alloy stubbs to go along with them with the correct spline count for the locker on one end and subaru output splines on the other... So, is this theoreticaly possible? mabey with a bit of machine work? or is this one of them no way in h*ll things?
  11. Definatly get the biggest strap you can aford, even to the point of not getting a strap and saving your money up to get a good one. I will show you a couple of my straps on the walker trip, or mabey earlier if you want to get together sooner, I am off work untill jan 2. As for tow hooks and schackles, shackles are great, never had any problems using them, I carry a couple in my jeep. The best tow hooks I have found are the factory tow hooks from GM trucks found on most mid 70's through present 4wd's. they are big and strong and will bend before they break unlike most aftermarket tow hooks that will break before they bend.
  12. I put a centerforce 2 in my EJ81 and love it, the pedal is easy to move but the clutch holds awesome.
  13. The factory tow plates should be ok as long as you are still running. Subarus dont weigh too much and anything you cant get over by yourself should only require a little bit of outside help. Just pay atention to your spotter (the guy franticly waiving his hands in front of you showing you where to point your wheels) and you should do fine. Walker valley is all about driving over or through things that you shouldnt be driving over or through with a bit of dirt road between stretches.
  14. sounds good Rollie, I would definatly try to make time for that lincoln locker though. Last time I was through walker, a general guideline for rigs was 31" tires and one locker. if you were running a biger tire - about a 35" you could get through without a locker. With as many rocks as there are at walker valley there will be times when you have at least one tire off the ground in a rig with limited articulation. And I cant wait to see that lift and tire combo, thats about what I have planned for the wifes car.
  15. So, its looking like this will be a fairly well mixed group of subarus and non subarus, I am interested to hear from the subaru crowd about what kind of cars they will be bringing. How much lift do you have? What size tire are you running? Do you have any lockers?
  16. I plan to tag along in my jeep for this run. And, just to let you all know, I live right outside of walker valley, on Lake Cavanaugh road, If you want we can meet up here, I have plenty of room for parking. And if anybody is bringing a trailer there is room for them too. We also have a prety good fire pit if anyone wants to have a party afterwords too. Let me know if anyone wants directions and i will post some here along with a map.
  17. It would probably be cheaper to replace the studs if you do it yourself, but I would go with the new lug nuts. Any napa, schucks, whatever your favourite local auto parts store is should have lug nuts to fit any style of stud. If you get the new lug nuts just make sure they arent longer then the holes in your wheels.
  18. That looks awesome! way to go, and good choice on the tires, I love swamper ssr's on the street, they are way soft and sticky. I used to have some 35" bfg mudders on my jeep, I could do a smoke show from hell with them on there but when I went to a 33" ssr I have never been able to break them loose on pavement.
  19. I will try to be able to go on the walker trip, I am scheduled to work that weekend but I will see if I can get that saturday off. It will also depend on wether I get a motor back in my jeep first, that shouldnt be a problem though. And on an off topic note, do you have any front hubs for a 90-97 ford ranger?
  20. So, your plans are to put the bronco trans behind the sub trans? That would give you .......( counting on my fingers here )....Alot of gears. Adapting the bronco input should be fairly easy, find an old clutch hub that fits the bronco input shaft and weld it to a piece of tubing with a matching sub trans output yoke on the other end, and you have an instant coupler. I might have to get together with you some time just for fun.
  21. Walker valley would not be a good place fro a stock sub. I would agree, you need to be lifted, and imho, you will have a prety tough time with any tire smaller then a 31, and at least one locker or welded rear. Some reinforced tow points would be good too. Bring spare axles too if you have them! Oh yeah, plenty of room for tents at my house.
  22. Walker Valley is located about 5 miles east of MountVernon in Washington. When you do all go let me know, I probably wont have my wife's sub even started by then much less done but I would love to tag along in my Jeep. Also, since I live just outside walker it would be a good place to meet up at before or hang out at after. <party?> We have plenty of room for people and a bonfire.
  23. OK, I need to apologise for an earlier post saying walker valley was closed. Walker valley is open and there are no plans to close it for the winter this year as they were doing the past few years. I drove through on my way home last night and then I went in to the local DNR office in sedro woolley to inquire about wether it would be open all winter, they said yes it will be open all winter. There have been several trail changes since I was there last so I do not know what the trails are like inside. I am hopeing to get a new motor built for my jeep soon and make a run through to see what it's like now.
  24. Thanks TheSubaruJunkie ! That was exactly what I was looking for.
  25. Just a quick question here.. For thoes people running a nissan transfer case (or other divorced transfer case) has anyone replaced the stock sub transmition with some other transmition? how about a divorced transmition bolted to the transfer case?
