  1. Ive got a set of them wheels! I plan to use them for off road with a mud tire. I've also got a set of them tires too! they are going on a set of aluminum centerline wheels for street use. Not to take over your thread but pyromanic, if them are the same as the wheels I have and I'd bet they are they are from a dodge D-50, also known as a ram. its a compact truck now out of production. the wheels are steel and are easy to find in most wrecking yards. I believe Mazda used nearly identical wheels on they're compact trucks. Looks good though, any other pics?
  2. I am going to try to make this one., so far I've never ben able to make it out with any of you guys but I may be available. I definatly wont have a sub to take out though. There is a slight chance my Jeep could be back together by then. If not, and most likely, I'd love to ride along. I used to run Walker in my jeep all the time as it was literally my back yard! Any way, I think I will plan on trying to get a ride with one of you.
  3. Hey thanks for the input guys! So 31 would be too much tire for the stock gearing to turn off road eh? If you say so I will believe you. Ive gotten spoiled by my cj5 with 33's and lockers front and rear. The build car is the other model with the dr trans in it though. Scott, I have half been following your posts on your t-case rig. I would love to do something like that with this but had mostly decided on a more conventional lift since there is better parts availability from guys like you. If you get this t-case thing sorted out to where you can offer some conversion parts before I come up with lift money I'd love to go that way. Also, all the body parts are up for grabs to anyone that wants them. all I plan to keep is the motor, axles, hubs, probably the tail lights for spares. so all the body glass interior and the push button trans are first come first served, sorry Numbchux, looks like Scott bet you to it on the headlight buckets. Need anything else? I should also point out the drivers front door is severely damaged as is the drivers front fender
  4. I have owned and driven subarus for many years now and finaly managed to squeeze one into the shop this weekend to begin my offroad Subaru build. First off, the car in the shop is going to get stripped of its vital parts and the shell discarded. Next, the motor from the donor car will go into a nearly identical car I have stored in a friends garage. I will then convert the wheel hubs from the donor car to 6 lug for the 15" aluminum centerline wheels with 27" bfg all terrain tires I have. I also plan to stare at the rear center section for a long time and see if I can come up with a better alternative to welding it. I wont hold my breath though. I am leaning to a 6 inch lift. Most likely an sjr if I dont fab up something myself. I plan to runn 27's on the street and would like to get a 31 under it for wheelin. Has anyone ever moved the rear axel back any? it seems like the rear of the rear door and front of the rear wheel well limit tire size a bit. The pic below is of the donor car Its been sitting in the field behind the shop for a couple years.
  5. I need to add my thoguhts here. Bfg all terrains are an awesome tire. and thats comming from a guy that has driven on alot of diferent tires from performance street tires all season tires all terrain tires and dedicated mud tires. My all time favourite tire is a swamper ssr but a bfg all terrain is definatly in my top 5 fav tires and will out perform alot of snow tires Ive driven on. End rant. on to helping you on a budget though, a snow tire is probably your best bet for an aggressive small tire. look for something with sharp edges and some good spacing between the lugs, that will allow dirt mud and other stuff to not get trapped inside the tread turning your off road tire into a drag slick. Your best place to find them cheap will be your local auto wrecking yard I used to exclusively buy my snow tires there for my dirt track race car.. they should sell for around $25 to $30 for a pair. Yep, snow tires on a dirt track race car. And by the way, when they stopped letting us run snow tires on the track guess what I ran? uh huh, 27" BFG AT's originally purchased for my sub. got them at the wrecking yard for $50 for the matched set of 4 with about 90% tread. Keep in mind most snow tires will have a softer tread compound and will wear faster on pavement. go ahead and leave in any studs for winter, they will help off road too but don't forget to dig them out in the spring. An ice pick and a pair of diagonal wire cutters work well for that.
  6. I have dealt with power windows in allot of rigs. The most common problem is the factory grease collects dirt or drys up over time. The best cure for a slow window is to remove the door panel and thoroughly clean all the tracks pivots and other moving parts of the window system. It is a bit messy and a pain in the a.. but worth doing. After you get all the old grease and grime off re-lube with some form of solid grease not just some spray on stuff.
  7. Those Pull Pals work great but are a bit spendy, I would recomend building your own if you want one. Another good anchor to winch/comealong from in a situation like that is your spare tire. Take your shovel out and dig a hole to lay your spare in so it is about 6" below the surface. wrap a short lenght of chain through the center of the rim to hook your cable to then cover it back over. you would be amazed at how much weight a setup like this will handle. also, if your fuel pickup is not picking up because of the odd angle your car is on you could try just putting in more fuel. Although if you have to pack everything in by hand it would be alot lighter to just pack in a 1/2 galon and another pump.just make sure if you bring in a pump that it has the right presure rating for your fi system. Too bad your not in NW Washington, I'd come rescue ya. I used to do that sort of thing for people all the time. I even worked with the local towing company that did all the 4x4 recovery stuff, I would go in with my Jeep and drag rigs out to where they could get to them with the 4wd tow truck.
  8. When it comes to aux lighting in some ways you get what you pay for. Higher quality lights will cost more but they will also place the light beam where you want it. Another pretty good rule is to get as big a light as you can. a larger reflector has an easier time pointing and distributing the light in the right spot for you. Light force lights are awesome but rather spendy. I usually run a pair of 6x9 rectangle KC's with 130watt bulbs. Also look for a light with a smooth lens and reflector, not a faceted lens or reflector. This will indicate a longer range design made to focus the light farther down the road instead of spreading it out directly in front of you. you can aim your regular headlights to do that. of course run the power off a relay with heavy gauge wire. I usually also get the power directly off the back of the alternator, it will often have a slightly higher voltage there then at the battery. This dose have the effect of burning out the bulbs faster but they also burn brighter. Another thing I do is have 2 spare bulbs with me.look here for the lights I use. Reasonably priced, very high quality. I have used these lights on road and off road they have very durable lenses that are quite resistant to tree branches. this is also a good kit with 2 lights wiring and relay. Highly recommended.

  10. I would have to disagree with you. if you have a tire spining and not moving you then you need more traction. sometimes wheel spin is good too though but not always. As for better ground clearance, yes it will be slightly better at higher presure but not enough to keep you from airing down. The huge gain in traction versus the inch or 2 of lost ground clearance is well worth the trade off. Also poping a bead usualy isnt a problem. A swamper like that on a car as light as yours is you should be able to go down to 6 psi and be fairly comfortable about not unseating a tire. Keep them around 12 and I would almost gaurentee there is no way you would loose one. I drive my jeep on the street including freeway at 70mph+ at about 16 psi. with no problems at all. Oh, and this isnt ment to be a rant about your driving or vehicle setup, just my thoughts and observations. You did seem to do prety well out there in the vids! One of these days when I get young and rich I need to get one of your 6" kits for my 86 wagon. Also this is probably the wrong thread for this but the car you are wheeling now has your smaler lift on it right? howcome you went with that instead of the 6" ? also how is the 6" on driveshafts and cv's? is the geometry still ok or is it pushing the limits of driveability and reliability on your cv's?
  11. Ok, I read the thread with the pics, that is expressway, thats fairly impressive then. I know that trail well. Ive been through it many times riding with others. you almost never see anyone make it up there under there own power. most take the bypass. I'e only driven it in my jeep once and had no problem at all driving right up it on the first shot, I stayed to the right on the rock though, not the left line that seems to be getting deeper. I will also say the day I drove it I believe it was dry out, not sure though. also, I am locked front and rear and am running 33" swamper ssr's at about 10 psi
  12. What is the name of that trail where the fj lost the tail light ? almost looks like the first hill of express way. Cant tell for sure though, I'd have to see it from the botom. or is that shark fin? Amyway, nice vids, wouldnt have minded them being in longer segments though, I think anyone crazy enough to dl thm is going to have a good enough internet conection to handle alot biger file sizes. I know I wouldnt even think about the small ones if I was on dial up. One of these years I'm going to have to get one of my rigs together so I can go with you guys. Also, scott how much air are you running in them SSR's ? looks like too much. On a car like that I'd have them down around 8-10 psi. that would give you way better traction.

Hey scot, I can see that you already have enough projects going but have you ever thought about building a race car to run at skagit speedway in the hornet division? aside from being way fun I think it would be a good way to get your name out there to more people with subarus that havent seen this site, just a thought. I'd even drive it for ya if you painted it in my colours and put my number on it.
  14. I race on a clay oval. not in a sub yet, they seem too under powered for the class I am in, last year I ran a honda civic this year I am going to run a mustang.

I have one for everything I drive, and the house, and several spares too! alll of them modified for more power and modulation. the legal power limit for a cb radio is 4 watts, there is no licence for cb that will let you legaly have more. most of mine are doing 15-30 watts. I run 400 watts at home. As for antenas, biger is usualy better but some small ones are almost as good as the really big ones. the best around are francis fiberglass antenas, they come in severall sizes from 2 to 8 feet. the 3 foot model is prety good for most people, you wont notice a whole lot of diference between that and an 8 footer and they dont cost alot either, I think a 3 footer is about $15 and an 8 is $20 at most stores that carry them.they have no tuning adjustment but are guranteed to have an swr or 1.5:1 or less.
  17. If you want the best performance in mud go with a bogger but the smallest they come in is a 31". Otherwhise, go with the SSR even though they cost a bit more, they are possibly the best swamper made I run them on my CJ5 and they have never let me down in any kind of terrain, rock, sand, mud, snow, cars, you name it these are the best tires for the job and they have awesome on road performance too.

    well, my thoughts were about getting some atv tyres for trail use only. they are easily found in up to 28" fairly cheap and have some wicked tread patterns.

  22. Heh, arent AMC's cool? I know how ya feel though, they do use an interesting mix of parts. However, after ya get it back together and running again it should run forever and have un-holy amounts of torque.
  23. Well, the motor dosent want to start yet, and I still need to get a transmision crossmember in so it dosent look like I will be makeing it out this time, I might try to get to karttrax and say hi and stuff though.
