  4. ok so i have a 97 outback w/ 192000 miles when i got the car the rear wiper didn't work. i hear noise back there so iknow there is power when i trun it on but nothing happens. would you suspect that the motor needs to be replaced? thanks? oh yeah does anyone know of there is a fuse for the reverse lights? they don't work either. i was going to change the switch by the transmission but thought someone might no if there is a fuse. my fuse box cover is gone so i don't know thanks for any help jake
  5. hi i have 97 subaru outback. recently driving on expressway at 80mph the hood flew up and busted my windshield. i have had the windshield fixed. there is a pretty big dent across the hood from one side to the other. it won't let me close the hood because it is dented down towards the motor. there is a 4 inch gap between hood and latch. . any ideas on pulling dents out. everything lines up and the dent isn't creased. so i believe if i can undent it it should allow it to latch. i have never done body work though. someone mentioned a toilet plunger to me thanks for any help jake
  6. ok so i have a 97 sub outback 191000 miles. recently had to do a valve job so had engine out. while out i replaced all seals. 80000 miles later i am noticing a pretty big oil leak on the back side of the engine. where the the exhaust pipes come together. so is there anything other than the rear main seal that could be leaking. i do not want to have to deal with it again. and if it is it can you replace it with the engine in the car. one more question. i really don't want to do it again. would you think it is going to be an expensive job? thanks i love this site jake
  7. hey so i now found a 2.5l long block from cns motors. it is a jdm import. these engines look like they come with everything from intake to to power steering to altenator. looks like everything. and you could just drop it in. says it has 40-60000 miles. wouldn't you think that all the parts on the long block would be worth it since my cars has 190000 miles of michigan salt on it. they want $1100 for it. wait wait sorry it says it is a sample picture and that it requires you to use your intake and other parts. sorry jake
  8. someone said new seals take some time to stop leaking? i don't understand. my car does drive better and better everyday since the rebuild. if that makes any sense. would rebuilt heads need time to brake in. any ways thanks for all the help. if and when the engine does go i will look into the 2.2 swap. anyone know how much power i will lose. i live in tahoe where there are some big mountains to cross. thanks jake
  9. i had heard you could put a 2.2 engine in and i have found them a lot cheaper. so you can pretty much just drop a 2.2 in. not much in the way of alterations. i would actually prefer the 2.2 just because i hear they are way way way more reliable. huge power loss? i am on the wst coast right now and would like to find a low low mileage one that will last me a long time. if anyone has one let me know. and maybe let me know if it is easy to drop in as it seems. i called atarco motors in sacramento ca and they told me i couldn't swap. but i have heard people on here talk about it thanks again you guys rule jake
  10. Ok i am sorry. i seem to post a lot of questions. but i have a 97 outback 2.5 with 190000mi. i got it from my brother in michigan and have been having nothing but trouble with the engine. i ended up rebuiling it myself thanks to a tb idler failure ( i am not much of a mechanic) now i have a ton of oil leaks and other leaks. it runs good but i am scared to drive it any distance. i know my brother kinda of rallied the car a bit and drove in sand and mud quite a bit. i am finding these used japanese long blocks with 40-60000 miles for like $1400. does anyone know much about these? i am thinking of buying one. it looks like they are pretty much complete. i am thinking that a newer one will have better sensors and computers and what have you. i rent cars alot cause like i said i am scared to drive mine. sorry about the long post. just trying to get some opinions. oh yeah my girl wants to get a newer car but we can't afford that and thought this might be a better alternative and keep the car alive for a long time to come. thanks jake
  11. well thanks for the advice. i am planning on going into the tb this week to do the cam seal so i will find out hopefully if it is main seal or oil pump. i just hope it isn't the rear main seal. do not want to go throught that.
  12. ok, i never said I was a mechanic. just a broke kid so i just pulled a few hoses and a few bolts and engine mounts and voilla. engine came out. followed manual and replaced parts. anyways ... power steering fluid hasn't drop a drop. so i am still kinda lost. raised the car up today and still couldn't find oil coming out of space between transmision and engine. but there is oil all over where two exhaust pipes come together and on a little square plate between exhaust and oil pan. didn't look like oil pan was clean though.checked transmission fluid level. it is perfect. i didn't mention i have a cam seal leak. (my fault or bad seal) but you can see oil coming out of tb cover and isn't near where other leak is. sorry if i am being a paine thanks again jake
  13. it is dripping on exhaust pipe. what is the steering rack and where may i find it? you guys are awesome jake
  14. yeah i re sealed the water pump. i worked at a boat mechanic shop kinda as an apprentice. they made sure i used the right kinda sealent and stuff like that. i just can't figure out where the oil leak is. the seperator plate would leak as the same spot as the rear main seal right? and if i don't have a leak out of where the transmission meets the engine it could rule those out. is there an oil cooler or anything back there? thanks again jake
  15. i rebuilt it. i replace clutch and all parts related, rear main seal, had the cylinder heads rebuilt and replace all gaskets and seals related did the crank seal, cam seals, timing belt, idlers and water pump. jake
  16. hey i have a 97obw 2.5 dohc with 188000 mi. just rebuilt engine due to a failure of tb idler. anyways i have put 8000 miles on car since the rebuild. it runs great. just did a oil change and noticed a lot of oil near the rear bottom of the engine. on the crossmember runing from one side of the car to the other. i did replace the rear main seal. i checked where the tranny and engine meet and don't see any oil coming from there so i am pretty sure the rear main seal is fine. can't think of anything else back there that might leak. any ideas? i have checked the heads as well and don't see any oil out of them either. i have heard something about seperator plate but do not know what that is. thanks jake
  17. hey it on the passenger side. do you know if that is the oil pump side? that is the only thing i didn't replace. might be kicking myself if thats it?
  18. thanks, i have actually been there and they charge 85$/hr. they seemed like great guys but they want 550-600$ to replace one cam seal in my 97 outback. that seems like an awful lot especially since the timing belt, tb pulleys, crank seal and waterpump are all new. i recently replaced but apperently i messed up one of my cams seals. i have a leak out of my tb cover. don't have time or tools anymore to fix myself. any ideas on how i could have messed it up? will it blow out or is there not enough pressure behind it? thnx
  19. hey i live in lake tahoe california. all the mechanics out here including reno are extremely expensive at least $90/hr. does anyone know of a good mechanic around here maybe even sacramento that has fairer prices. i grew up in michighan and am used to paying $60/hr tops
  20. ok thats kinda of good to hear. i am a back yard mechanic at best and i did pull the intake manifold and engine. i was wondering if there were passages in the intake manifold that coolant went through. i did notice a little antifreez coming out of the radiator hose when i put everything back together but thought i had taken car of it. one more thing can antifreeze come out of the top of a headgasket? thanks
  21. ok i may be overreacting but not sure and am real scared. i have a 97 obw 180000 miles. i just had my heads redone thanks to a bad idler pulley. i put new headgaskets on. car has been running great for 6000 miles. today i noticed some of anti-freeze on top of the cylinder head on the passenger side.( same side upper radioator hose goes to) can anti freeze come out of your heads or are the heads full of oil. i haven't had any overheating symptoms and don't see any antifreeze in the oil. i pray i don't have a headgasket problem and am hoping maybe the anti freeze is coming from the hose somehow. cant tell where it is coming from. somebody help me get some piece of mind distraught
  22. looks like a dirt road to me whats the fuss about but atleast somone is putting some scratches on a new car have to admire that don't see that often
  23. oh yeah i do happen to have a can of seafoam lying around would that do anything if i put it in my gas tank
  24. ok probably a dumb question. but i have 97 obw it has a 185000 miles on it. i am sure the fuel injectors have never been cleaned. does that stp injector cleaner do anything or should i not waste my $3. the car seems like not much power out of the 1st couple of geers but a lot when going faster thanks for bearing with my question jake
  25. well i think if you have a 153000 you should go ahead and change the idler pulley. i know it is really expensive but i have a 97 outback and at 170000 the toothed idler blew up on me on the way ffrom mich to calif. it happend in nebraska where noone knows anything about subarus. i ended up towing to california and having to pull the engine to get my heads rebuilt. just a thought
