  1. Hey I Have 97 Legacy Outback 2.5l Dohc. 182000 Miles. Just Did Valve Job On Both Heads. Have New Head Gaskets Obviously. New Water Pump, Thermostat And Front, Rear And Cam Seals. Car Is Runnig Great I Think. No Over Heating Lights Are Coming On And Temp Gage Stays Just Below Medium. Haven't Seen It Go Past Since I Rebuilt The Engine. I Was Adding A Half Quart Of Oil Yesterday And When I Opened The Filler Cap Saw Smoke Or Steam Coming Out Of It. Is This Normal Or Is My Car Running Hot. Like I Said Haven't Seen A Sign Of It Overheating But I Have Never Seen Smoke Come Out Of Oil Filler Help?
  2. i just replaced my clutch. i called the subie dealer to get the specs on the height of the step on the flywheel and they told me they don't ever resurface them and not to. so i would be hesistant on going to a dealer. as far as i know if you don't resurface your flywheel they void the warranty on your clutch.
  3. hi everyone is probably tired of me posting but i have one more question. i have a 97 sub legacy outback. 181000 miles and the 2.5l dohc engine. i just had a valve job done. while they were at the machine shop i replaced front and rear seal, water pump, clutch. i then put a new timing belt kit on. which includes your tensioners and pulleys and belt. the car is running great. but i am getting a weird sound when it is cold. its almost like a knocking but it also kinda resembels a belt slapping the timing cover. i am most likely sure its not piston slap because i have heard that on other subarus and its not the same. the noise does go away as soon as the car warms up. any ideas for me thanks
  4. did the dude just say an automatic is better than a manual for driving in snow. i will take a manual any day in mountains and snow
  5. hey i have a 97 legacy outback 2.5l with 182000 miles on it. i live in northern california but the car came from michigan. needless to say the exhaust is kinda rusted. can anyone speculate how hard it will be for me to replace my oxygen sensor. i have heard mixed stories. some of my mechanic friends tell me to take it somewhere others say i can do it. i have the part. any suggestions. it is the front sensor jake
  6. i'm sorry it is a 2.5liter motor with the bucket style lifters and shims. which are all adjusted correctly jake
  7. hi i have 97 legacy outback i have read that map sensor came out around 2000 and that all cars previous to 2000 have maf sensor. autozone plugged in and told me i have bad map sensor anyone know? jake
  8. hey i have a 97 outback with 181000. i had the sprocketed timing belt pulley blow. had to replace my heads. i ended up rebuilding most of the engine except pistons and crank. anyways i have new timing belt and pulleys. on cold mornings i hear a little i guess clatter sound. only when i give it a little gas. goes away when the car warms up. does that sound like a piston slap? any chance it could be an oil pump ? thanks jake
  9. my timing belt broke and caused my valves to bend. i am not much of a mechanic but i pulled the engine out very easily. i took the heads to a machine shop. they rebuilt the heads adjusted the the valves and did everything for a little under $400 dollars. i replaced everything else i could possibly replace another 500 dollars. (Except the bottom end and pistons which i have been told can go 3-400000 miles). now i have a top end with no miles on it really for $900. to me it seemed better than buying a rebuilt or used engine for $2500. car runs great tons of power and the new clutch is really nice jake
  10. hey i was just thinking after i put the engine back in i had left a couple of air hoses off. i started the car and then the car idle rough and stalled. i figured out what i had done wrong. would that lead me to having trouble codes since i never reset them.
  11. sorry it is a 97 subaru legacy outback 2.5l dohc. manual. my haynes manual says something about pressure sensors are only in automatic and turocharged. also if anyone has time or knowledge. i just rebuilt my engine. timing belt pulley broke so i had to have a valve job done. it runs really really good now but when autozone plugged in they gave me a #2 cylinder misfire code. the car seems to run to good to be running on 3 cylinders and i am under the impression that since it has a coil pack number one would have to misfire too? any help would be great i spent all my money rebuilding and live in califorinia and now i have to pass emissions thanks again jake
  12. hey autozone plugged into my car today and told me i have a bad MAP (manifold air pressure) sensor. does anyone know where i can find it in the engine. i don't know what it looks like or where to start. also does anyone know if i will be able to change my o2 sensor myself. the car is from michigan so i am sure it is rusted pretty good. will it be a paine to get out or is it possible i can get it out with some map gas and wd -40 thanks alot jake
  13. you have plenty of life left in it. had an 88 subaru that made it to 352000 when it broke on the side of the expressway. i din't have enough money to tow it or fix it so i left it. probably had a lot more left in it
  14. hey i am in the process of rebuilding my 97 2.5l dohc engine. i am almost done and my dad told me he read read something about filling the radiator from the bottom but doesn't quite remember what he read. has anyone heard anything about a special way to refill the coolant. thanks jake
  15. jack it up from under neath pull it forward get in the car and muscle it out. 10 min tops
  16. i have gone through complete hell with my 97 outback. before i got it the timing belt was changed. 700 miles into owning it idler pulley blew into pieces. now i am 2000 into rebuilding my engine not any fun
  17. if you pull the intake off you can keep most of the hoses and wires on making easy to put back together. i lifted the hood straight up wired the intake with most hoses connected right to the hood. just need to replace gaskets
  18. does anyone know if there is a fuse for reverse lights i lost my fuse cover panel and don't have an owners manual. needless to say i don't have any reverse lights. any other ideas other than fuses and bulbs
  19. i just did my clutch on my 97 subaru outback. its a 2.5l but i used a haynes manual and if i remember the flywheel was 65 ft lbs and the clutch plate was 132 IN lbs. so dived that by 12 if you don't have an inch lb torque wrench. they may be different on a 2.2 but i can't imagine that much..
  20. hey i bought rebuilt cylinder heads they have sent me some wrong cam caps with the head. i am under the impression that heads are line bored at the factory dealer. so am i right to think that i won't be able to use the wrong cam caps they sent me or even the old ones of my bad cylinder heads. jake i think from now on i will just get my original heads redone instead of buying rebuilt ones off the internet
  21. 180000 but new cylinder heads and valves but old cams and lifters they are all completely different gaps between the cam lobes and lifters when i put the lifters and cams on. some are .004 some are ..025 in. it doesn't make sense to me how they could be that far apart. maybe they sent bad cylinder heads?
  22. hey i just bought rebuilt cylinder heads. ineed to adjust my valves. i have called numerous dealers and they are making it seem like it is going to be harder to adjust the valves with my cylinders out. does this make sense. can anybody give me a suggestion. also some of my valves on my new rebuilt cylinders are way off. the gap is huge. on omy other new rebuilt cylinder some of the gaps are tiny. is it possible they sent me bad cylinder heads?
  23. i have 97 legacy outback. my timing belt sprocket idler pulley blew into pieces. so my valves got ruined. 2.5 dohc anyways i bought rebuilt cylinder heads. when i bought them they told me they would be adjusted and pretty much ready to be put on. before i slapped them on i put the lifters in and the cams on to check the valve clearence. some were right and some were tight and some were loose. i was told by the company that their they are hydraulic lifters and they would adjust while running. for some reason i don't believe this. i spent all of my money on towing my broken car from nebarska to califronia (apparently no one in central nebarska will work on a subaru without raping you) i don't know if i can switch the looser looser lifters with the ones that are closer to cams or not. any suggestions would be great. i have replaced all other vital parts while my engine has been out. i don't want to skimp and do the wrong thing but i have no more money. help please jake
  24. replace sprocket idler mine blew up on the way from michigan to califronia got a timing belt kit with timing belt and all idlers and tensioner from ebay oem parts for 155. local auto part shop wanted 370 oh yeah now i am in the process of putting new heads on thanks to that sprocketed idler
