hey i have a 97 ob it has a 185000 miles on it. it has a hydraulic clutch. when i first got it i noticed you had to push the clutch in a long way to engage it. i recently put a new clutch kit in. i even had the flywheel resurfaced figuring that might help the problem. nope. is there any way to adjust hydraulic cluthes? oh yeah the resevoir is full of fluid and have never seen it leak thanks jake

ok probably a dumb question. i am putting new spark plug wires on my 97 obw to try to get rid of a misfire code. on the box it says to do it one at a time so as not to mess up the firing order. does anyone know anything about this. do i have to change them in the firing order and if yes what is the firing order. also are there any advantages of new wires other than maybe getting rid of misfire codes. i mean will i get more power or better gas mileage or anything. thanks jake

damn i got hosed i thought 82 dollars was a lot for plug wires. i am a boat mechanic apprentice and thought maybe it was accurate because of the foreign auto but damn they took me. i am a broke ski bum and can't afford that i guess i will get rid of that mechanic and keep working on my car myself. go back to the autozone when i need codes checked. thanks for all your help

hey i have 97 sub outback with 180000 i keep getting an cylinder #2 engine misfire code. apparently there are aftermarket plug wires on. my mechanic has told me that alot of time aftermarket plug wires can cause misfire. the car doesn't run rough and i have never felt it stumble. anyways he sold me some subaru oem wires which cost $82. (which made me gasp) he told me that is a good place to start. Is an engine misfire bad? I can't really afford these plug wires and was thinking of taking them back. besides trying to get the misfire to quit is there any other advantages of new plug wires? just wondering if anyone had any advice. jake

hey 97 outback 180000 i am getting cylinder misfire codes as well. i have noticed that the spark plug wires are not oem. i have read on this forum that non oem wires can cause problems. i am trying to get the car to pass smog and cannot get the light to turn off long enough to pass smog. the plugs are new ngk platinums. i haven't checked the coil pack. wondering if anyone knows about the non oem wires and what to check for on the coil pack. thanks

hey 97 obw 2.5 182000miles just replaced heads due to failure of pulley. put new pulleys on and new timing belt. on cold mornings i am hearing a claterring/knocking coming from the front of the engine. as soon as the car warms up it goes away as far as i can tell. i have heard that a failing tensionr can cause the belt to loosen and slap on the cover until the heat makes the fluid work better. does anyone know anything on this. or know a way i can check to see if the tensioner is failing. i never want to experience bent valves again- complete nightmere i know about piston slap but have never heard it to compare the sounds. please help

I just had to replace my cylinder heads because i had a bad t belt pulley. when i had it a part i noticed that at top dead center and 180 off all four pistons were in so as far as i no, if you line it up to top dead center you can turn the cams as much as you want and you don't have to worry about bending valves. i have 97 leg outback with the 2.5 and i would assume it is the same

a97obw that is an interesting point. i bought some rebuilt cylinder heads for my 97 outback. when i recieved them something looked funny. they sent me wrong cam caps. three of them had the exact same # for example 3 of them said 3LI cylinder 3 left side intake. i knew about the line boring and sent them back immediately. i am now glad i did after your theory

ok yeah another question from me. i think my car possesed. ok 97 outback 182000 miles. 2.5l just redid cylinder heads and other parts. i was putting a little bit of oil in my car today. the car was on and idling fine. as i was adding oil i noticed a pretty loud gurgling/spitting coming from the filler tube. i have never heard such a thing before. i just did an oil change 500 miles ago too and it was very low on oil today. it never burned oil before that as far as i know. i also heard the gurgling in the dipstick HELP! HELP! HELP! jake

97 outback 180000 miles hey hopefully someone can help me at about 65 mph i get a pretty good vibration/ shimmy in my steering wheel. the tire tread is even and not wearing funny on the inside or outside which makes me believe that my alignment is ok. i don't really no what else to check. could the tires be out of balance? i have a new clutch too. but i was getting the vibration before the new clutch. any ideas?

other people have told me piston slap too. i really really hope it is but i have also read that the heat from the engine makes the tensioner fluid start working and the noise will go away as it warms up. any thoughts on that. the noise is more like a knock too. oh yeah the car has 180000 miles. at this point i am counting on the fact that it is piston slap until i can save enough to get it checked out.

hey i recently redid my timing belt and 5 pulley tensioners on my 97 legacy outback 2.5 i am noticing a noise upon cold start ups. it goes away as soon as the car is on for a coupke of minutes. i have read about piston slap and am not quite sure that is what is is. if the tensioner is failing is it the one with the plunger that is going. i have already had to redo my cylinder heads thanks to a blown pulley and i never want to go through that again. anyone know of a way to check this and determine if it is my tensioner or if it is just piston slap. also could it be my oil pump? cause as soon as the car heats up just a bit it goes away. i would think if it was a tensioner it would always be noticeable thanks
